A Biotech Company Focused on Female Hair Loss Treatment

Surveys indicate that approximately 50% of women worldwide experience hair loss at some point in their lives. Compared to men, women find the resulting thinning of hair particularly distressing. In the United States alone, women spend billions of dollars annually on hair care products in an effort to achieve thicker, stronger hair. However, many ingredients in these products that claim to promote “hair regrowth” lack scientific validation. Currently available anti-hair loss products can only help prevent further hair loss and support regrowth by repairing existing hair. There is still no product capable of completely curing hair loss.

VCBeat (WeChat Official Account: vcbeat) learned from foreign media that on April 16, local time in the United States, Medi Tresse, a hair medical care institution based in Massachusetts, launched a novel technology for treating female hair loss—new platelet concentrate therapy. This therapy is one of the most advanced techniques for treating female hair loss, capable of repairing hair follicles and surrounding blood vessels on the female scalp, while replenishing key nutrients essential for healthy hair growth.

Medi Tresse is a biotechnology company focused on the treatment of female hair loss, founded by Dr. Mary Wendel in 2015. The company addresses the needs of each patient with hair loss by providing comprehensive non-surgical hair regeneration treatment plans. Currently, its hair regeneration offerings include platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, low-level laser therapy (LLLT), and FDA-approved vitamins, supplements, and other hair regrowth products.

Female hair loss is primarily categorized into five types: androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, scarring alopecia (cicatricial alopecia), telogen effluvium, and traction alopecia. Among these, androgenetic alopecia is the most common type in women, resulting from hormonal imbalances involving androgens. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder in which an overactive immune system triggers inflammation around hair follicles, thereby inhibiting hair growth. Scarring alopecia involves the permanent destruction of hair follicles in areas affected by alopecia, leading to scar formation. Telogen effluvium is a temporary form of hair loss mainly triggered by external factors such as pregnancy, emotional stress, systemic illness, or surgical trauma. Traction alopecia results from prolonged tension on the hair, which exerts pressure on hair follicles and causes permanent hair damage.

Medi Tresse research has found that a platelet concentration of 1.4 to 1.6 billion per milliliter of blood is optimal for repairing old blood vessels and promoting the growth of new ones. Medi Tresse first tests the patient’s blood to determine their baseline platelet count, then customizes a platelet solution at the optimal concentration to ensure it stimulates specific hair growth areas, increases existing hair density, and reactivates dormant hair follicles.

It is worth noting that the novel platelet concentrate therapy, developed by Medi Tresse as an improvement upon the original platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, contains ten times the concentration of natural growth factors found in platelets under normal conditions. PRP therapy works by isolating the platelet-rich fraction from blood and leveraging its natural growth factors to reactivate dormant hair follicles, thereby stimulating new hair growth.

Both novel platelet concentrate therapy and PRP therapy utilize the principle of "isolating platelet-rich plasma from blood via centrifugation"; however, novel platelet concentrate therapy builds upon PRP therapy by specifying a target platelet concentration range, thereby enabling customization of the optimal platelet concentration for each patient.

Medi Tresse recommends that patients with hair loss undergo the novel platelet concentrate therapy once a month for the first three months of treatment. A booster session should be administered within six to twelve months thereafter to maintain hair health. This therapy is primarily indicated for androgenetic alopecia and traction alopecia, while its efficacy in treating alopecia areata and scarring alopecia is not significant.
