VCBeat (WeChat Official Account: vcbeat) learned from foreign media that on April 20, U.S. local time, biopharmaceutical company Nocion Therapeutics completed a $27 million Series A financing round. The funds from this round will be used to develop novel analgesic drugs. This drug can target inflamed tissues for treatment while preventing patients from developing opioid addiction.

It is reported that this round of financing was led by F-Prime Capital Partners and Canaan Partners, with participation from Partners Innovation Fund and Bio Innovation Capital.

Nocion Therapeutics is a biopharmaceutical company that, under the leadership of its founders, Dr. Bruce Bean and Dr. Clifford Woolf, is currently developing a novel drug, Nocions, for the relief of inflammation-induced pain.

Following inflammation in a specific tissue within the human body, the flow of Na+ in neurons is accelerated, thereby activating nociceptors and causing the patient to experience pain. Previously, analgesic drugs often indiscriminately destroyed neurons in the painful area to reduce pain perception. This approach causes significant damage to the human body and can lead to adverse effects over time.

Nocions is a targeted biomolecule that carries an intrinsic electrical charge, enabling it to enter specific neurons through large-pore channels in the human body, including TRP and P2X channels. Once inside, it inhibits all Na+ channels on these neurons, thereby blocking pain perception caused by sodium ion influx. Due to its inherent charge, Nocions repel normally functioning nociceptors, sparing healthy tissues from damage and preventing opioid-like addictive responses. This therapeutic approach delivers potent local analgesia while ensuring that patients do not experience systemic numbness or loss of motor function, thus minimizing adverse effects on other bodily tissues.

Dr. Richard Batycky, CEO of Nocion Therapeutics, stated, “Through our research into the mechanisms of human pain, we have identified a targeted drug molecule. This molecule enables us to alleviate pain in a targeted manner without causing adverse effects such as paralysis or cognitive slowing. Supported by our latest round of financing, we will further advance the development of such targeted therapies, and we believe this research will have a significant impact on patients’ lives.”

Julie Grant, Partner at Canaan Partners, stated, “We are delighted to collaborate with Nocion Therapeutics on the development of novel clinical-stage therapeutics. The company boasts an outstanding medical team and innovative drug development concepts. We are confident that our partnership will yield new therapies better aligned with market trends, thereby more effectively meeting patient needs.”
