VCBeat (WeChat Official Account: vcbeat) learned from foreign media that on April 23, U.S. local time, medical technology company Onera Health completed a $9.3 million Series A financing round. The funds from this round will be used to further develop the company’s wearable sensing devices, helping users with sleep problems improve their sleep quality.

It is reported that this round of financing was jointly invested by Jazz Pharmaceuticals and imec.xpand.

Onera Health, established in 2017, is a biotechnology company dedicated to human sleep health. Headquartered in California, with an R&D laboratory in the Netherlands, Onera Health aims to improve human sleep quality through the development of sleep diagnostic devices.

Currently, sleep disorders have increasingly become a focal point of societal concern, affecting approximately one-fifth of the global population. Common sleep issues include insomnia, sleep apnea, and hypersomnia. However, individuals suffering from these conditions often refrain from seeking hospital-based treatment, as being removed from their comfortable home environment can exacerbate their inability to fall asleep, while also entailing substantial medical expenses.

In recent years, medical devices targeting sleep issues have primarily focused on simple somatosensory transmission devices, such as smartwatches or mattress sensors. These devices provide limited and incomplete sleep monitoring information. Onera Health has developed superior sleep monitoring equipment by leveraging advanced sensing technology and data algorithms. Users can place the sleep monitoring device on their neck before going to bed and connect it to a computer or smartphone. The next day, they can review the overnight monitoring data on their smartphone or computer to assess their sleep status. If any abnormalities are detected in the data, users need only submit the relevant records to Onera Health. The company will then collaborate with a team of medical professionals to promptly analyze the user’s health report and provide the optimal diagnosis and treatment plan.

Furthermore, the company has expanded its business scope to include a list of medications alongside the diagnostic and treatment plans provided to users.

Ruben de Francisco, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Onera Health, stated, “We are grateful for the support from our new investors. Sleep disorders have long been a societal concern, and we aim to leverage advanced technology to help patients address their sleep issues at home.”

Luc Van den hove, President and CEO of imec.xpand, stated, “We are highly optimistic about the growth prospects of Onera Health. The sleep medicine market has always been a key focus for us, and we hope to expand our presence in this sector through our collaboration with Onera Health, thereby delivering superior services to users.”
