VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) has learned that software development company GoCheck recently completed a $6 million Series B financing round. The round was led by FCA Venture Partners, with participation from new investors Mucker Capital and Sovereign’s Capital, as well as existing investors Interwest Partners and Marc Benioff. The funds will be used to enhance the artificial intelligence capabilities of the company’s vision screening software and to improve its EHR (Electronic Health Record) system.

GoCheck, founded in 2013 and headquartered in Arizona, USA, is a smartphone software development company specializing in pediatric ophthalmology. The company has developed a mobile application called GoCheck Kids, which enables pediatricians, healthcare professionals, and parents to conduct vision screenings for children under the age of six to detect potential eye diseases.

After downloading the GoCheck Kids app, users input the patient’s demographic information and capture a photograph of the patient’s eyes. The software then automatically transmits the image to the patient’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) system and generates a vision screening report. Leveraging cloud computing technology, the platform enables both patients and physicians to remotely access images and screening results, facilitating the timely detection of ocular abnormalities.

It is understood that visual impairment is the leading health barrier among children. Due to poor expressive abilities in children, many conditions are easily overlooked. In the United States, the most prevalent disabling childhood diseases are visual impairments, including amblyopia, strabismus, and refractive errors. Early examination and detection can improve the cure rates of ocular diseases. However, statistics show that fewer than 15% of preschool-aged children in the U.S. have undergone comprehensive eye examinations, and fewer than 22% have received basic vision screenings.

GoCheck Kids is an alternative to hardware-based vision screening devices, offering advantages such as low cost and ease of use. Professional hardware equipment costs thousands of dollars to purchase and involves cumbersome operational procedures, whereas this software costs just over $100 per month and is eligible for insurance reimbursement. The software is currently used in more than 4,500 pediatric centers across the United States and Europe.

Dr. David Huang, Co-founder and Chief Information Officer of GoCheck, stated in a press release: “Many pediatric eye conditions, including amblyopia, myopia, hyperopia, and retinoblastoma (a rare but deadly childhood cancer), are not easily detected or diagnosed by healthcare professionals. While vision screening devices have proven effective in identifying vision problems in children, they are costly. We are changing this landscape by bringing pediatric vision screening into the digital age through intelligent software.”
