Dr. Yuan-Ting Zhang, AIMBE Fellow, Confirmed to Speak at 2019 Shaoxing International Medical Device Innovation Summit

The 2019 Shaoxing International Summit on Innovation in the Medical Device Industry will be held on May 28 at the Yangming Hotel, Kuaiji Mountain, Shaoxing, Zhejiang.

The summit was hosted by the People’s Government of Yuecheng District and the Shaoxing Municipal Science and Technology Bureau, organized by the Yuecheng District Science and Technology Bureau and the Shaoxing Yuecheng Medical Device Industry Innovation Service Complex, co-organized by Beijing Lanfeng Capital, Peking University Healthcare Innovation Valley, and Shaoxing Lanbei Investment, with Probe Capital and VCBeat serving as partner organizations.

Professor Zhang was elected as a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering, a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), an IEEE Fellow, and an AIMBE Fellow in 2006–2007.Director of the Key Laboratory of Health Informatics, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Director of the Institute of Biomedical and Health Engineering, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Honorary Chief Scientist of the CAS/CUHK Center for Biosensors and Medical Instruments; Chief Scientist of the National Key Basic Research Program (973 Program).

He previously served as Vice President of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS), Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine, and Founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics. Professor Zhang has been invited to deliver over 300 academic lectures both domestically and internationally, including the Plenary Invited Talk at EMBC’18 held in Hawaii in 2018 and the Earl Owen Named Invited Lecture at the SMIT International Conference in Seoul in 2018. He was listed for four consecutive years among China’s Highly Cited Researchers in the field of Biomedical Engineering (BME) by Elsevier.

Dr. Zhang Yuanting currently holds the Chair Professorship in Biomedical Engineering (BME) at City University of Hong Kong. He previously served as the Founding Head of the Department of BME at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Concurrent Director of Biomedical Engineering at Zhongshan School of Medicine, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, and Chairman of the Biomedical Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers for the 1996/97 and 2000/01 terms.

Academician Zhang Yuanting proposedTheory of Health Engineering, integrating science, engineering, and technology with biomedicine, sociology, law, and management, with a primary focus on the prediction and prevention of major diseases, to drive the development of the emerging big health industry and facilitate the transition from current passive medical care to future proactive health.

Academician Zhang pointed out,The Value of Wearable Sensor Technology Is Equally Important and Inextricably Linked to Artificial Intelligence, it will play an irreplaceable role in future healthcare, the Internet of Things (IoT), and smart cities. Driven by the increasing maturity of China’s medical device industry technology and its supporting supply chain, national policies promoting healthcare reform, tiered diagnosis and treatment, and support for the R&D and upgrading of domestically produced equipment, as well as the introduction of advanced global technologies and management practices in the medical device sector, China’s medical device industry is poised to enter a “golden decade” of rapid growth.

Starting in 2018, on February 26, the Center for Medical Device Evaluation of the former China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) issued the Technical Review Guidelines for the Registration of Customized Additively Manufactured Medical Devices; in August, the State Council issued the Notice on Printing and Distributing the Key Tasks for Deepening the Reform of the Medical and Healthcare System in the Second Half of 2018; and on November 5, the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) released the Special Examination Procedures for Innovative Medical Devices. These developments clearly demonstrate that national policies encouraging innovation in high-end medical devices and optimizing processes to accelerate approval have undoubtedly provided a significant boost to the development of China’s medical device industry.

According to relevant data, the market size of China's medical device industry reached RMB 445 billion in 2017, with a growth rate of 20.3%. By 2018, the market size further exceeded RMB 500 billion, and it is projected that the market size of China's medical device industry will approach RMB 650 billion in 2019. In 2018, the medical equipment segment remained the largest sub-sector within China's medical device industry, with a market size of approximately RMB 301.3 billion, accounting for 56.80% of the total. This was followed by the high-value medical consumables market, which had a market size of approximately RMB 104.6 billion, representing 19.72% of the total. The various sectors of China's medical device industry are flourishing across the board, demonstrating immense market potential.
