2019 Shaoxing International Medical Device Industry Innovation Summit Forum will be held on May 28 at the Yangming Hotel, Kuaiji Mountain, Shaoxing, Zhejiang.
The summit was hosted by the People’s Government of Yuecheng District and the Shaoxing Municipal Science and Technology Bureau, organized by the Yuecheng District Science and Technology Bureau and the Shaoxing Yuecheng Medical Device Industry Innovation Service Complex, co-organized by Beijing Lanfeng Capital, Peking University Healthcare Innovation Valley, and Shaoxing Lanbei Investment, with Probe Capital and VCBeat serving as partner organizations.

Xi Tingfei, former director of the center at the National Institutes for Food and Drug Control (NIFDC), has confirmed his participation in the 2019 Shaoxing International Summit on Innovation in the Medical Device Industry, where he will share insights on hot topics in the medical device field in recent years: the current status and development trends of biomaterials in China.

Xi TingfeiFormer Director of the Center at the National Institutes for Food and Drug Control (NIFDC), Former Director of the Medical Device Quality Supervision and Inspection Center at the National Institute for the Control of Pharmaceutical and Biological Products, Researcher. Director of the Biomedical Engineering Center at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, concurrently serving as Director of the Peking University Center for Biomedical Materials and Tissue Engineering, Doctoral Supervisor.Long-term engagement in the evaluation and standardization research of biomaterials, artificial organs, and tissue engineeringAs a distinguished young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions to the Ministry of Health, he/she enjoys the Special Government Allowance of the State Council.
Formerly served as Director of the Center for Medical Device Testing at the National Institutes for Food and Drug Control (NIFDC). During his tenure, he concurrently held positions as a Visiting Researcher at Japan’s National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) and as an International Visiting Scholar at Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
Currently serves as Vice President of the Chinese Society for Biomaterials, Director of the Committee of Member Representatives of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Journal of Biomedical Engineering, and Chairman of the Expert Committee of the Engineering Research Center for Cardiovascular Interventional Therapy Technologies and Devices under the Ministry of Education.
Currently serves as an expert in the preparation of the implementation plan for the Ministry of Science and Technology’s “13th Five-Year” National Key R&D Program on “Biomaterials and Tissue/Organ Repair and Replacement,” an expert for the National Development and Reform Commission’s Biomedical Engineering Special Project, and a medical device review expert for the China Food and Drug Administration.
In May 2016, he was invited to attend the 10th World Biomaterials Congress and was awarded the lifetime honorary title of “Fellow of the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering.” To date, a total of 31 experts and scholars in China have received this honorary title.
Currently conducting or having completed 30 national and ministerial-level research projects; authored more than 250 academic papers (80 of which are indexed by SCI); served as editor-in-chief or co-author for 18 books; led or participated in the drafting of 15 national or industry standards; and filed 8 patent applications.
The National Technical Committee on Biological Evaluation of Medical Devices, under his leadership, established a standard system for the safety evaluation of passive medical devices, resolving the longstanding lack of criteria for assessing the safety of medical devices that contact, intervene in, or are implanted into the human body. This has made significant contributions to improving the quality of medical devices and ensuring their clinical safety. The fourth-generation coronary stent he developed—the “Novel Fully Biodegradable Magnesium Alloy Stent”—is at the forefront of the industry.
Combining Innovation and Introduction, with a Focus on Independent Innovation。
When discussing how to accelerate the development of China’s medical device industry, Xi Tingfei recommended adopting new technologies to reduce the cost of large-scale medical equipment, alleviate the financial burden on patients, and meet the needs of a broader patient population. By developing domestic industries, the prices of imported high-end medical devices can be stabilized. Meanwhile, it is essential toRational Resource Allocation to Reduce Waste。

With the increasing maturity of China’s medical device industry technology and its supporting supply chain, driven by national policies such as healthcare reform, tiered diagnosis and treatment, and support for the research, development, and upgrading of domestically produced equipment, and against the backdrop of introducing advanced technologies and management practices from the global medical device sector, China’s medical device industry is poised to enter a “golden decade” of rapid growth.
Starting in 2018, on February 26, the Center for Medical Device Evaluation of the former China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) issued the “Technical Review Guidelines for the Registration of Customized Additively Manufactured Medical Devices”; in August, the State Council printed and distributed the “Notice on Issuing the Key Tasks for Deepening the Reform of the Medical and Healthcare System in the Second Half of 2018”; and on November 5, the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) released the “Special Examination Procedures for Innovative Medical Devices.” These developments demonstrate that national policies encouraging innovation in high-end medical devices and optimizing processes to accelerate approval have undoubtedly provided a significant boost to the development of China’s medical device industry.
According to relevant data, the market size of China’s medical device industry reached RMB 445 billion in 2017, with a growth rate of 20.3%. By 2018, the market size further exceeded RMB 500 billion, and it is projected that the market size will approach RMB 650 billion in 2019. In 2018, the medical equipment segment remained the largest sub-sector of China’s medical device industry, with a market size of approximately RMB 301.3 billion, accounting for 56.80% of the total. This was followed by the high-value medical consumables market, which had a market size of approximately RMB 104.6 billion, representing 19.72% of the total. All sectors of China’s medical device industry are flourishing, demonstrating immense market potential.
The coexistence of rapid development and market consolidation in China’s medical device market is a unique feature globally.Attention within the healthcare industry will once again focus on the medical device sector. The new systemic reforms will inevitably bring about deconstruction and reshaping of the medical device industry, enabling China’s medical device industry to achieve overtaking on a bend and rise against the trend. Will you have a place in the future industrial innovation landscape? It depends on your vision and choices. Does every opportunity to broaden your horizons and drive innovative development hinge on whether you seize it?
