VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) learned from foreign media that on June 10, U.S. local time, biopharmaceutical company Artizan Biosciences completed a $12 million Series A financing round. The funds will be used to support the development of the company’s gut microbiome research platform for the treatment of diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease and arthritis.
It is reported that this round of financing was jointly invested by Hatteras Venture Partners, Elm Street Ventures, and Johnson & Johnson Innovation.
Artizan Biosciences, headquartered in North Carolina, USA, is a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing drugs targeting the gut microbiome to treat chronic inflammation and other diseases.
IgA-SEQ is a proprietary technology platform of Artizan Biosciences, designed to identify bacterial species that may contribute to inflammatory bowel disease-associated arthritis (hereinafter referred to as IBD). IBD is an umbrella term for ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD), which can lead to arthritis. Its primary manifestations include peripheral arthritis and axial joint involvement, unexplained non-infectious intestinal inflammation, and potentially extra-articular or extra-intestinal systemic conditions, such as mucocutaneous lesions and inflammatory eye diseases.
According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 3 million American adults are affected by inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Current treatment options include anti-inflammatory drugs, immunosuppressants, and antibiotics. These medications primarily aim to restore microbial balance within the human body to treat the disease. When pharmacological therapies fail, patients are left with surgery as their only option.
The IgA-SEQ platform identifies pathogenic microorganisms by detecting immunoglobulin A (IgA), an antibody that triggers an immune response in intestinal mucus, specifically targeting and neutralizing these pathogens. Meanwhile, researchers develop therapeutic agents based on the biological characteristics of the neutralized bacteria, providing treatment options for patients who are unable to undergo diagnosis via the IgA-SEQ platform for similar conditions. As the pathogenic microbial groups have lost their biological activity under IgA attack, patients receiving this therapy will no longer face the risk of disease recurrence.
Artizan Biosciences plans to expand the therapeutic scope of its IgA-SEQ technology by incorporating liver-associated microbiome research into its next phase of development, while continuing in-depth studies on intestinal diseases.
