Health Insurance Provider
Recently, VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) learned from foreign media reports that Anthem has announced a definitive acquisition agreement with Beacon Health Options (Beacon). Anthem will acquire Beacon from its existing shareholders, Bain Capital and Diamond Castle Holdings. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2019, with specific financial terms undisclosed.
It is reported that Anthem has completed 19 acquisitions since its inception. Notably, in July 2012, the company acquired Amerigroup for $4.9 billion. Amerigroup specializes in the management of public healthcare programs, providing clients with practical solutions to expand access to and quality of medical services while reducing overall healthcare costs. Currently, Amerigroup, together with other affiliated healthcare organizations under Anthem, serves more than 4.5 million beneficiaries of public health plans across 19 states.
Beacon is the largest independent behavioral health organization in the United States, leveraging clinical expertise and mature solutions dedicated to the management of mental health and substance use disorders. It provides specialized care for individuals with conditions such as autism and depression. Focusing on the individual level, Beacon delivers tailored care plans to its served populations, including vulnerable groups, military personnel, and employees of Fortune 500 companies. Currently, Beacon serves over 36 million members across all 50 U.S. states.
Founded in 1944, Anthem is a leading publicly traded health insurance company with a substantial scale. Through its affiliated health plans, Anthem collaborates with portfolio companies across various sectors, striving to make healthcare simpler. The company has developed Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs), a type of health insurance plan that allows members to access medical services from participating providers and hospitals at lower costs; and Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs), a type of health insurance plan under which members pay predetermined fees to participating healthcare institutions in exchange for a range of medical services provided by enrolled physicians and healthcare professionals, as well as other specialized products such as life, disability, and long-term care insurance. Additionally, Anthem offers networked dental and vision products, wellness program services, and flexible spending account management services compliant with the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA). Anthem serves more than 78 million customers, including over 40 million enrollees in its family health insurance plans.
Gail K. Boudreaux, President and Chief Executive Officer of Anthem, stated that this partnership will expand Anthem’s service offerings in the field of consumer behavioral health. Committed to streamlining healthcare delivery and improving people’s lives, Anthem finds Beacon’s extensive research in behavioral health and its robust longitudinal data highly aligned with its strategy to expand chronic disease management services and diversify into broader healthcare sectors. Through personalized care models, Anthem will provide customers with comprehensive, integrated health solutions.
Anthem and Beacon will combine their specialized products and clinical expertise, leveraging enhanced analytical methods and broader partnerships, to establish an integrated behavioral health network that provides convenient and affordable healthcare services to users across China.
Following the completion of the acquisition, the Beacon team will be integrated into Anthem’s behavioral health business, becoming part of Anthem’s diversified portfolio. Senior leadership from Beacon, including Dr. Russell C. Petrella, President and Chief Executive Officer of Beacon Health Options, will join Anthem to collaboratively develop innovative behavioral health solutions and further expand this business line.
Petrella stated, “We are delighted to partner with Anthem to provide behavioral health services to over 60 million Americans. Beacon’s customer-centric, integrated clinical care model helps individuals and their families address physical and behavioral health challenges. Both parties will work together to expand user coverage and enhance the quality of care.”
