VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) has learned that ZOLL Medical recently announced the acquisition of Cardiac Science. The specific terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Under the acquisition agreement, ZOLL Medical will acquire Cardiac Science’s portfolio of automated external defibrillator (AED) products, as well as its facilities in the United States and Europe.

ZOLL Medical Corporation, established in 1980 and headquartered in Massachusetts, USA, is a medical device company. The company is dedicated to developing medical devices for emergency care and related software solutions to enhance clinical operational efficiency. It is a subsidiary of the Asahi Kasei Group.

ZOLL Medical is dedicated to providing clinicians, fire professionals, and lay rescuers with a comprehensive suite of products and technologies—such as automated external defibrillators (AEDs), heart rate monitors, data management platforms, and fluid resuscitation technologies—to assist them in treating critically ill patients requiring resuscitation.

Cardiac Science, founded in 1991 and headquartered in Wisconsin, USA, is a cardiac science company. The company is dedicated to manufacturing automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and providing related services and accessories to its customers. It is a portfolio company of Aurora Resurgence, a private equity firm based in Los Angeles.

Cardiac Science’s flagship product, named Powerheart, is an automated external defibrillator (AED). Currently, this product has been deployed in corporate offices, hospitals, schools, restaurants, shopping malls, airports, sports venues, and other public spaces across the United States and Europe. In the event of cardiac arrest, individuals can access a nearby Powerheart device to promptly save the patient’s life.

“Following the completion of the acquisition, the two companies will join forces to provide advanced first-aid technologies and AED solutions for emergency responders and lay rescuers in managing medical emergencies,” said Elijah A. White, President of ZOLL Medical Corporation.

Dev Kurdikar, President and CEO of Cardiac Science, stated, “By joining ZOLL Medical Corporation, we will accelerate our pace of innovation to meet a broader range of customer needs, continue providing emergency care services to communities, and fulfill our mission of saving lives.”

Elijah A. White further emphasized, “A key benefit of the merged operations is the integration of ZOLL Medical’s emergency AED management program into Cardiac Science’s AEDs.” Although Cardiac Science has already installed 500,000 AEDs in public spaces, these devices are sometimes difficult to locate and access. ZOLL Medical’s AED management program can precisely tag AED locations, enabling 911 dispatchers and the public to clearly identify the number and whereabouts of nearby AEDs when a patient exhibits symptoms of cardiac arrest, thereby facilitating timely rescue efforts.

Dev Kurdikar stated, “Cardiac Science expects to launch a series of innovative products this year to enhance the ease of use and performance of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and will integrate these products into ZOLL Medical’s AED portfolio, thereby benefiting patients suffering from cardiac arrest.”
