Youper

AI Chatbot Provider

VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) learned from foreign media that on June 18, U.S. local time, the artificial intelligence company Youper announced the completion of a $3 million seed funding round. The proceeds will be used to accelerate the development of its AI chatbot and expand its user base. It is reported that this round of financing was solely led by Goodwater Capital.

Youper, based in San Francisco, USA, is a startup that leverages AI to provide psychological counseling to users. It was founded in 2016 by Dr. Jose Hamilton. A psychiatrist with over a decade of experience, Dr. Hamilton has treated up to 3,000 patients. Through his interactions with individuals suffering from mental health disorders, he discovered that many patients face barriers that prevent them from seeking medical help early on, even among those with long-standing histories of depression or anxiety.

“The first barrier is fear,” Jose Hamilton stated in an interview. “Patients are often terrified of seeing therapists or psychiatrists, as they are afraid to discuss their mental health. The second barrier is cost; patients often face high prices to access care from therapists or psychiatrists.”

One in four people worldwide faces serious mental health challenges. In the United States alone, 43 million individuals suffer from anxiety or depression, yet nearly 60% of these patients do not receive adequate support. Conservatively estimated, the mental health sector represents a $20 billion market; however, this market is plagued by a severe shortage of service providers, including physicians and therapists.

Jose Hamilton then partnered with the company’s Chief Technology Officer, Diego Couto, to develop an intelligent robot capable of addressing mental health issues. The initial program they created lacked a conversational interface and attracted only a small number of users. Recognizing the need for more personalized features, they aimed to match users with appropriate psychological technologies—including cognitive behavioral techniques—to better meet their mental health needs.

Youper differentiates user groups through personalized attention, combining mental health research with user data to match individuals with the right psychological techniques. It provides an AI-powered chatbot to help users improve their mood and regulate their mental well-being.

Currently, Youper has been downloaded over one million times. The majority of its users are young people, with more female users than male users.

“This may be because the roles shouldered by female users are more challenging and bring about emotional impact. Additionally, it could also be that women pay more attention to mental health issues, while men endure their suffering in silence,” Youper analyzed.

Youper is available for users to download for free, and the company states that user data is stored anonymously when using the app, with no confidential data shared or sold to third parties.

According to the latest statistics, users spend an average of 7 minutes per conversation when using Youper, with 80% of users experiencing a significant reduction in negative emotions after their sessions. Additionally, 25% of users remain active 30 days after registration.

It is worth noting that Youper cannot directly replace therapists or psychiatrists; rather, it lowers the barrier for patients who are reluctant to seek professional psychological counseling, enabling them to access mental health support more easily. Jose Hamilton encourages patients to seek treatment as early as possible when psychological counseling is needed, allowing them to discuss their mental health issues more “comfortably.”

It is reported that Youper has completed three rounds of financing: one pre-seed round and two seed rounds. The most recent round, closed on November 16, 2018, raised $530,000.
