VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) learned from foreign media that on June 18, U.S. local time, biotechnology company Element Biosciences completed a $15 million Series A financing round. The funds from this round will be used to support the company’s innovation in genetic diagnostic technologies and the development of a new gene analysis platform.

It is reported that this round of financing was led by Fresite Capital and Venrock.

Element Biosciences is a biotechnology startup dedicated to the development of novel genetic diagnostics and data analysis tools. The company’s technology optimizes end-user experience by enhancing data quality and streamlining workflows, thereby supporting the advancement of the healthcare industry.

Gene diagnosis, also known as DNA diagnosis or molecular diagnosis, involves diagnosing common genetic disorders or familial genetic diseases by examining molecular structures and expression levels based on current understanding of the human genome and molecular genetics data. Due to environmental or genetic factors affecting certain zygotes or the maternal body, harmful mutations may occur in the offspring’s genome, leading to disease. To prevent and address such conditions in a targeted manner, patients need to undergo laboratory-based gene diagnosis and analysis.

Traditional genetic diagnostics typically require the extraction of human tissue samples to collect DNA fragments, followed by an analysis of the individual’s genetic status. Although this approach has a scientific basis, it generally fails to comprehensively analyze the entire human genome, resulting in significant deviations in the analytical outcomes. Element Biosciences aims to leverage a data integration and analysis system to capture complete human DNA sequences, conduct comprehensive genomic data analysis, identify mutated gene segments, and develop corresponding diagnostic protocols.

Genetic analysis is not limited to patients. Since genetic diseases are typically hereditary, genetic testing in healthy individuals can predict the likelihood of pathogenic mutations, thereby enabling targeted interventions to reduce the disease incidence in offspring.

Molly He, Co-founder and CEO of Element Biosciences, stated, “The funds raised will drive the company’s R&D efforts. We aim to innovate across reagents, instruments, and analytical algorithms, leveraging our platform under development to streamline genetic analysis workflows, attract more customers, and create greater value for our shareholders.”
