Developer of Therapeutic Drugs for Hereditary Metabolic Diseases
VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) learned from foreign media that on June 19, U.S. local time, biotechnology company Comet Therapeutics announced the completion of a $28.5 million Series A financing round. The proceeds will be used to develop coenzyme A (CoA)-related drug candidates.
It is reported that this round of financing was led by Canaan Partners and Sofinnova Partners, with participation from existing investor INKEF Capital and new investor BioInnovation Capital. In addition, Roel Bulthuis of INKEF Capital, Dr. Colleen Cuffaro of Canaan Partners, and Dr. Anthony Walsh of BioInnovation Capital will all join the board of directors of Comet Therapeutics.
Comet Therapeutics is a leader in CoA science and intermediate metabolism research. The company owns the proprietary CoMET platform, which enables the development of next-generation therapies for diseases caused by dysregulated CoA activity. Currently, the CoMET platform holds the potential to develop corresponding therapies for a variety of diseases, including metabolic disorders, neurological conditions, immune-mediated diseases, and other life-threatening conditions.
CoA is essential for cell growth, including the metabolic processes of fatty acids, amino acids, and sugars; the regulation of gene expression; and energy provision for the normal functioning of mitochondria and the TCA cycle. CoA dysfunction can lead to many rare genetic disorders, and dysregulated CoA metabolism is also a key factor in causing abnormalities in neurometabolism and immunometabolism.
The CoMET platform, developed by Comet Therapeutics, is specifically designed to regulate coenzyme A (CoA). This platform enables the precise delivery of specific CoA molecules to diseased tissues or organelles, thereby restoring normal cellular metabolism and regulation once these coenzyme A molecules are depleted.
“Although the role of coenzyme A in metabolic diseases is widely recognized, we are the first company dedicated to leveraging it for the treatment of related conditions,” said the CEO of Comet Therapeutics. “Coenzyme A and its metabolites are central to cellular regulation and energy production, and we will use this financing to accelerate the development of the CoMET platform.”
“Comet’s platform offers versatility and unique therapeutic potential,” said Dr. Peter Van Vlasselaer, Chairman of Comet Therapeutics. “Comet Therapeutics is building a relevant patent portfolio around its core technology. We see unprecedented opportunities in the fields of immunometabolism and neurometabolism.”
