As part of the acquisition, the startup will become part of UnitedHealth Group’s research division, focusing on healthcare improvement and innovation.

Headquartered in Minnesota, UnitedHealth Group is a diversified healthcare company. The company is dedicated to launching innovative products and services to improve individual health outcomes. Its core competencies in clinical care resources, information, and technology enable it to meet evolving healthcare needs. The company aims to build a stronger, higher-quality healthcare system.

PatientsLikeMe, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is the world’s largest personalized health network, dedicated to helping individuals discover new treatment options, connect with appropriate healthcare providers, and take action to improve their health outcomes. With over 650,000 members who contribute personal health data to the community, PatientsLikeMe serves as a reliable source of real-world disease information and a robust clinical resource. To date, the company has published more than 100 research studies.

PatientsLikeMe’s online platform provides patients with chronic diseases the opportunity to track and share their symptoms and treatment experiences, enabling them to contribute data for research and connect with others facing similar conditions.

“This independent division of UnitedHealth Group focuses on research to drive healthcare innovation,” said Jamie Heywood, CEO of PatientsLikeMe. “We chose to join UnitedHealth Group because of their effectiveness in improving individual health outcomes and ensuring more comprehensive healthcare results.”

Heywood emphasized that following the acquisition, members' identifiable personal data would not be shared with any research partners, nor would private information be exchanged among members.

UnitedHealth Group has acquired 18 companies since its establishment in 1974. Notably, on June 20, UnitedHealth Group agreed to purchase Equian, a healthcare payment company, from its private equity owners for approximately $3.2 billion.
