Each summer, the “post-graduation aesthetic medicine boom” sparks heated discussions on social media. A growing number of graduates are opting to undergo a “beauty transformation,” joining the surge in cosmetic procedures during the summer break. The number of consumers purchasing medical aesthetic services on Tmall has skyrocketed, with college students and incoming freshmen comprising the majority.

Data shows that in mid-June this year, as the National College Entrance Examination and summer vacation officially kicked off, the total number of consumers purchasing medical aesthetic products on Tmall increased by 2.34 times month-on-month compared to May.

Compared with working professionals, students tend to opt for more lightweight aesthetic procedures, favoring “minimally invasive cosmetic treatments.” According to the “2019 Summer Aesthetic Medicine Data” jointly released by Tmall and Ali Health, among the most popular procedures among students,The top three included facial slimming, hydration, and skin whitening.

However, as public acceptance of medical aesthetics continues to grow, procedures such as dermal fillers, rhinoplasty, pigmentation removal, and double eyelid surgery are garnering increasing attention. Notably, the number of individuals undergoing double eyelid surgery has surged by 27-fold year-over-year.

“I just graduated from university and want to present a better version of myself in life and work. I hope that cosmetic surgery will help me find a job and a partner,” said Xiao Zhong (a pseudonym), who attended university in Beijing. Having graduated this year, her mother covered all the costs of her cosmetic procedures.

According to a 2018 survey report on the medical aesthetics industry, the market size of China’s medical aesthetics sector has exceeded RMB 220 billion, showing a trend toward younger demographics. In particular, after the college entrance examination (Gaokao), many parents take their children to hospitals for cosmetic procedures.

Data from Tmall also reflects this trend: compared to the same period last year, the number of young consumers aged 18–24 who purchased medical aesthetic services on Tmall during June and July was 2.14 times higher than the previous year. This age group’s share among all medical aesthetic consumers is steadily increasing, accounting for nearly 33% of the total.

A staff member at a plastic surgery clinic stated that many parents of current high school graduates belong to the post-1970s generation. As parental demographics and mindsets evolve, numerous parents are choosing cosmetic procedures as graduation gifts to support their children’s future prospects. Boldly predicting: after the summer break, this new cohort of university freshmen will collectively emerge with enhanced appearances.

It is worth noting that although women remain the mainstream demographic for medical aesthetics, men are increasingly prioritizing their appearance against the backdrop of the dominant “beauty economy.” On Tmall’s medical aesthetics platform, male users now account for more than 20% of consumers.

People in Shenyang favor double eyelid surgery, those in Fuzhou prefer rhinoplasty, and residents of Chongqing are keen on semi-permanent makeup... The varying preferences for cosmetic procedures across different cities broadly reflect aesthetic differences driven by culture and geography.

For instance, in Haikou, where the scorching heat poses a constant risk of sunburn, the pursuit of skin-whitening medical aesthetic treatments ranks highest among all cities. Guangzhou demonstrates the highest acceptance rate for breast augmentation procedures nationwide. Interestingly, while consumers in Chongqing show substantial demand for semi-permanent makeup, anti-aging treatments, and pigmentation removal, they exhibit relatively little interest in hydrating and whitening procedures. This suggests that the renowned fair and radiant complexion of Chongqing women is well-deserved rather than mere hype.
