On July 23, 2019, VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) learned that healthcare manufacturer 3B Scientific announced the acquisition of stethoscope product supplier Cardionics, with the transaction amount undisclosed. It is understood that following the completion of this acquisition, Andy Strandell, Chief Operating Officer of Cardionics, will continue to lead Cardionics.

Cardionics was founded in 1969 by Abe Ravin, M.D., FACC, and is headquartered in Texas, USA. At that time, Dr. Ravin developed the first heart sound simulator to help his students learn to identify and differentiate between normal and abnormal heart and lung sounds. Since then, Cardionics has developed unique, interactive, and experiential comprehensive systems, flexibly applying them to various scenarios such as classroom teaching, clinical diagnosis, and telemedicine. Cardionics has played an indispensable role in the increasingly widespread use of auscultation instruments in clinical diagnosis.

3B Scientific, founded in 1948 and headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, is led by CEO Todd Murray. It is a company that provides anatomy education and simulation services in fields such as healthcare and medical education. As a portfolio company of JH Whitney Capital Partners, it has representative offices in more than 100 countries and regions worldwide.

The 3B Scientific product portfolio includes: human skeleton, torso, and organ models; anatomy teaching software; teaching aids and systems in the fields of physics and manufacturing; and clinical simulation devices for basic nursing, clinical medicine, health education, and more. With steadily growing sales volumes, 3B Scientific has become a pioneer in the global market for anatomical education. The company’s customer base primarily consists of comprehensive universities, general colleges, departments of health education, other healthcare educational institutions, major general and specialized hospitals, as well as distributors specializing in medical education.

“Cardionics is the perfect complement to 3B Scientific’s medical education and simulation product portfolio,” said Todd Murray, CEO of 3B Scientific. “We will continue to expand our presence in the global healthcare simulation market, and Cardionics’ auscultation products will provide strong synergies and exceptional specialized service to enhance our simulation offerings.”

Andy Strandell, Chief Operating Officer of Cardionics, expressed excitement about the promising future of the two companies, stating, “The combination of 3B Scientific and Cardionics is an ideal match, creating a powerful synergy between 3B Scientific’s global distribution capabilities and Cardionics’ leading auscultation products.”

According to the 2016 MarketsandMarkets report, the medical simulation market has experienced significant growth over the past decade and is projected to reach $2.27 billion by 2021.
