Guests at the event jointly witnessed the official release of the “Standard Dataset for Gastric Cancer (2019 Edition)”

As a malignant gastrointestinal tumor, gastric cancer not only ranks first in incidence among all types of malignancies in China but is also one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide.

Gastric cancer not only severely impacts patients’ quality of life but also constitutes a global public health and socioeconomic challenge. Due to its multifactorial etiology and complex, diverse pathogenesis, coupled with an increasing trend toward younger onset in recent years—with cases of advanced-stage gastric cancer among young adults becoming increasingly common—deciphering the “code” of gastric cancer and achieving precise diagnosis and treatment have become critical health issues garnering multidisciplinary attention from gastroenterology, general surgery, preventive medicine, and other fields.

The “GGSA Big Data Symposium and Huacheng Forum on Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal Oncology,” jointly organized by Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University, the Chinese Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal Surgery Study Group (CLASS), and the Guangdong Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal Surgery Alliance (GGSA), was grandly inaugurated in Guangzhou on July 20. This conference served as a premier academic exchange platform for gastrointestinal surgery and artificial intelligence in China, drawing significant attention from domestic and international surgeons, gastroenterologists, scholars, and AI experts.

The "Standard Dataset for Gastric Cancer (2019 Edition)" was also officially released at the conference. This standard dataset was jointly compiled by Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University in collaboration with multiple top-tier hospitals across China, the Chinese Laparoscopic Gastrointestinal Surgery Study Group (CLASS), and the Guangdong Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal Surgery Alliance (GGSA), along with numerous industry experts, professors, core physicians, and technical professionals. It was jointly released with Yidu Cloud as the technical support provider.

Address by Professor Li Guoxin, Vice President of Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University

Given the pronounced regional disparities in gastric cancer incidence across China, there are significant variations in data structures and standards among different regions. This underscores an urgent need for deep interdisciplinary integration and collaboration involving general surgery, gastroenterology, preventive medicine, and other specialties to facilitate more efficient and standardized collaborative research, diagnosis, and treatment of gastric cancer.

The release of the "Standard Dataset for Gastric Cancer (2019 Edition)" will significantly improve the quality of existing clinical information resource collection, reduce communication barriers among different regions and medical institutions, achieve effective utilization of high-quality, structured clinical information resources, support the development of gastric cancer-related research, and promote the improvement of gastric cancer diagnosis and treatment standards.

At the press conference, Professor Li Guoxin, Vice President of Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, and initiator of big data construction in gastrointestinal surgery, delivered an inspiring address. Professor Li stated that gastric cancer is a malignant tumor posing a significant threat to national public health. The establishment of the "Standardized Dataset for Gastric Cancer (2019 Edition)," a manual for classification and annotation guidance, will play an immeasurable role in enhancing the quality and efficiency of medical artificial intelligence research, as well as improving clinical detection, diagnosis, and treatment of gastric cancer. He expressed hope that the compilation of the "Standardized Dataset for Gastric Cancer (2019 Edition)" would help propel the development of the medical AI era and represent a solid and correct step toward implementing the national "Healthy China 2030" strategy and standardization strategy.

Associate Professor Hu Yanfeng, Deputy Director of the Department of General Surgery at Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, presented to the attendees the contents of the Standard Dataset for Gastric Cancer (2019 Edition), including patient demographic information, postoperative recovery and complications, follow-up indicators, and reference standards. He also introduced the participating institutions and personnel involved in compiling the dataset, as well as the development process and progress.

Mr. Sun Zhe, Co-founder and CEO of Yidu Cloud, was invited to attend

“Standardized Gastric Cancer Dataset (2019 Edition)” serves as a critical foundation for establishing data standards, facilitating uniformity and interoperability in gastric cancer data structures and standards across hospitals, thereby jointly advancing the application and promotion of artificial intelligence in the diagnosis, treatment, and research of gastric cancer. According to estimates from the “China Cancer Report 2018,” the incidence of gastrointestinal tumors in China accounts for approximately half of all adult cancer cases. Furthermore, the “China Cancer Report 2015” indicates that there are 679,000 new cases of gastric cancer and 498,000 deaths annually in China. Globally, nearly half of all new gastric cancer cases and deaths occur in China.

These issues urgently need to be addressed by expanding current medical resources, improving diagnosis and treatment standards, and implementing more efficient gastric cancer management. Therefore, the release of the Standard Dataset for Gastric Cancer (2019 Edition) underscores its significant importance—facilitating the integration and utilization of high-quality, structured clinical information resources, supporting the development of AI-driven big data clinical research on gastric cancer in the new era, conducting real-world clinical studies, and enhancing the standard of gastric cancer diagnosis and treatment.

“Standard Dataset for Gastric Cancer” is the latest milestone following the “Standard Dataset for Ophthalmology” and the “Standard Dataset for Colorectal Cancer.” Leveraging its deep expertise in medical artificial intelligence, Yidu Cloud has facilitated real-world studies on nearly 100 diseases at hospitals, providing sustained momentum to enhance quality and efficiency in clinical applications, medical research, and healthcare management. This effort offers robust support for implementing the “Healthy China 2030” strategy and the National Health Commission’s initiative to “Build Smart Hospitals.”
