On July 30, 2019, VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) learned from foreign media reports that medical technology company Quanta Dialysis Technologies (Quanta) announced the completion of a $48 million Series C financing round. Investors in this round included Btov Partners, Wellington Partners, and Seroba Life Sciences.
Quanta will use the funds from this financing round to develop its patented hemodialysis product, SC+, and submit a marketing application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
It is reported that Quanta has previously completed three rounds of financing. Among them, the company completed a £27 million Series B financing round in November 2014, and a £14.3 million Series A financing round in November 2009.
Quanta, a medical technology company founded in 2008 and headquartered in Warwickshire, UK, is dedicated to developing hemodialysis systems to deliver high-quality renal care to patients. There are currently nearly 4 million hemodialysis patients worldwide, with approximately 30,000 in the UK alone. Quanta aims to improve the lives of dialysis patients through innovative technologies. Its flagship hemodialysis product, SC+, offers flexible and convenient operation and can provide Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) to patients.
Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) is a novel blood purification method that can replace the function of damaged kidneys around the clock. This therapy is one of the "three major life support technologies" for critically ill patients and includes two processes: hemofiltration and hemodialysis. CRRT mimics the filtration principle of the glomerulus, achieving solute clearance through convection and diffusion to maintain internal homeostasis. This therapy is characterized by hemodynamic stability and high solute clearance rates. Additionally, it can clear inflammatory mediators and provide nutritional support to patients, thereby enhancing immune function.
SC+ is a compact hemodialysis product developed based on innovative technologies for the preparation and use of dialysate, enabling its deployment in hospitals, clinics, and even home settings. SC+ has obtained CE safety certification from the European Union, and clinical trials have demonstrated that its therapeutic efficacy is comparable to that of conventional treatment regimens used in medical institutions. Quanta plans to accelerate the research, development, and refinement of this product to bring it to market.
The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) states that the market for home hemodialysis products will gradually expand, necessitating more innovative designs from researchers to provide high-quality treatment options and clinical care for hemodialysis patients. Quanta is a leader in the field of kidney disease treatment, boasting an experienced research and development team and advanced hemodialysis technology products.
Quanta CEO John E. Milad stated, “This financing round marks a significant milestone for Quanta. We are deeply grateful to both new and existing investors for their continued support. In the near future, Quanta will launch its first SC+ personal hemodialysis systems for patients with end-stage renal disease in the UK, thereby facilitating renal replacement therapy.”
Christian Schutz, Managing Director of Btov Partners, stated, “There are several million dialysis patients worldwide, yet the field of renal therapy has suffered from a lack of technological innovation for many years. We believe that SC+ will help physicians develop better treatment plans to improve patient outcomes.”
