Recently, VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) learned from foreign media reports that Sterifre Medical, a healthcare technology company headquartered in Kirkland, Washington, announced it had raised $8 million in Series B financing to develop the Aura handheld tabletop sterilization device. It is understood that Sterifre has raised a total of $20 million to date, including $12 million from its initial funding round in 2017.

“The proceeds from the Series B financing will fund Sterifre Medical’s initial commercialization in the U.S. acute care market early next year,” said Richard Shea, CEO of Sterifre Medical, in prepared remarks. “We thank our investment partners for their continued support. This financing will enable the company to play a unique role in enhancing staff and patient safety.”

Sterifre Medical is a medical technology company that commercializes a range of products based on innovative disinfection and sterilization technologies to meet the urgent needs of healthcare institutions for rapid, cutting-edge medical equipment disinfection.

The patented technology behind the newly developed device is named Aura™. Aura™ features a compact, one-touch system capable of treating various organisms on hard surfaces in both physician offices and hospitals. According to Sterifre Medical, Aura is a fully automated medical disinfection device that enables the safe and effective use of the sterilant hydrogen peroxide through a novel method that does not damage the items being processed. Sterifre Medical states that the device is designed to achieve EPA-mandated disinfection standards without compromising the integrity of the equipment being disinfected.

“Multiple studies have shown that improper use of disinfectants can lead to stress cracking and premature failure of equipment,” said Shea, a co-founder of Stericycle and former CEO of Olympus Respiratory America. “By using Sterifre’s Aura point-of-care system to disinfect these devices, these adverse effects can be effectively eliminated while still achieving the appropriate level of pathogen kill required by the EPA.”
