Recently, VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) learned from foreign media reports that Massena Memorial Hospital in New York has received a $20 million grant from the New York State Health Care Facility Transformation Fund. Hospital officials stated that this funding will help stabilize MMH’s (Massena (N.Y.) Memorial Hospital) precarious financial situation and ensure that residents of Massena and surrounding areas have access to high-quality healthcare services.
David Bender, CEO of Massena Memorial Hospital, stated in a press release, “This grant is critical to our restructuring of Massena Memorial Hospital and to placing the hospital on a path toward sustainable operations.”
It is understood that St. Lawrence Health System, headquartered in the United States, has established a new nonprofit entity to acquire the assets of Massena Memorial Hospital and operate the facility.
On July 30, relevant officials signed an agreement to convert Massena Memorial Hospital into a private non-profit hospital affiliated with the St. Lawrence Health System. Massena Memorial Hospital has applied to be redesignated as a Critical Access Hospital (hereinafter referred to as “CAH”), with its net income projected to increase by $2.6 million in 2019.
Loretta Perez, Chair of the MMH Board of Directors, stated, “We appreciate and commend the state for expediting the approval of our CAH application. Additionally, in May, the Massena Board of Trustees and the MMH Board of Directors approved a management agreement with St. Lawrence Health System, under which St. Lawrence will assume responsibility for the day-to-day operations of Massena Memorial Hospital.”
Loretta Perez, Chair of the MMH Board of Directors, stated, “This funding will help us transform to adapt to the evolving healthcare landscape.” “MMH’s transformation is underway and highly challenging, but we are confident that, as a community, we can achieve this goal. There is still much work to be done in the future,” Loretta Perez noted.
