Medical Artificial Intelligence Developer
Recently, VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) learned from foreign media reports that physician burnout has become an increasingly serious issue in the healthcare industry, as administrative requirements have become an overwhelming part of daily medical practice. In response, Saykara Inc. has launched a new AI-powered intelligent voice assistant program. This tool leverages artificial intelligence to listen to doctor-patient conversations and automatically populate notes, diagnoses, orders, and other data into the physician’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR), thereby reducing their workload.
Seattle-based startup Saykara, founded in 2015 by Harjinder Sandhu—who previously sold his speech recognition company to Nuance Communications—raised approximately $7.5 million to begin developing a more automated clinical documentation system.
Saykara was established to streamline the documentation process for clinicians using AI-based speech recognition software, which can be used to create clinical notes and push them into patients’ electronic health records.
Sandhu stated that the company has reduced the time physicians spend on documentation-related tasks by approximately 70% by eliminating additional work, such as after-hours charting. “The platform is seamlessly listening and identifying the key points you are actually conveying,” Sandhu said. He noted that this feature performs well in routine visits or primary care settings, allowing clinicians to easily capture extensive information without interrupting the conversation.
Like many AI companies, Saykara relies on human reviewers as part of its model, enabling timely corrections to the algorithm and enhancing its ability to capture information in clinical settings.
Dr. Michael Fletcher, Chief Medical Officer at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield, Indiana, stated that he began using Saykara a few months ago and immediately recognized its advantages over the hospital’s previous speech recognition software. “I believe the value lies in making the patient care process easier; after conversing with patients, one only needs to review the quality of the notes and make adjustments,” said Dr. Fletcher.
In addition to the ease of use and improved quality of clinical notes, Michael Fletcher has identified several other positive factors since switching to Saykara. He noted that, on one hand, dictating clinical records in front of patients brings transparency, allowing patients to immediately intervene and correct the record if necessary.
As a hospital administrator, Michael Fletcher added that the Saykara intelligent voice program has fully liberated physicians, alleviating adverse conditions caused by professional burnout.
In terms of product, this 30-person startup faces competition not only from other startups such as Suki and Notable Health but also from large tech companies like Microsoft and Nuance. To differentiate its product, Sandhu continuously optimizes the program’s reliance on medical terminology and enhances its technology’s ability to understand conversations within context.
In terms of business strategy, the company focuses on promoting its products within larger healthcare systems by highlighting its capabilities across various specialized domains. Saykara currently serves approximately 20 healthcare systems and medical group clients, including Providence St. Joseph Health, MultiCare, and Providence Swedish Medical Group.
In outlining his broader vision for the company, Sandhu stated that his goal is to transform Saykara into an “intelligent clinical assistant.” Rather than merely facilitating clinical documentation, the platform will leverage this information to help physicians better collect data from patients, assist in the diagnostic process, and provide critical information during clinical encounters at the appropriate time.
