Since the Guangdong Provincial Government issued the Action Plan for Promoting the Development of “Internet + Healthcare” in 2018, which explicitly permitted licensed physicians who are registered or filed to conduct online follow-up consultations for certain common and chronic diseases, and to issue online prescriptions for such conditions after reviewing patients’ medical records, numerous internet healthcare companies have begun to strategically position themselves in this sector.

On August 9, Jianke’s internet retail pharmacy in partnership with Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital on Dongchuan Road officially opened in Guangzhou. With a business area of 280 square meters, it is currently Jianke’s largest DTP (Direct-to-Patient) pharmacy and its seventh DTP outlet. The store offers more than 8,000 pharmaceutical products for selection. Customers can purchase imported new and specialty drugs via facial recognition technology and enjoy more professional pharmaceutical care services.

Comprehensive Drug Selection, Offering Convenient and All-Around Services

It is understood that DTP (Direct-to-Patient) pharmacies represent a new model of pharmaceutical services directly catering to consumers. This model is already mature abroad and typically focuses on prescription drugs and patented medications for severe and critical illnesses, allowing patients to conveniently purchase imported novel and specialty oncology drugs. Furthermore, DTP pharmacies are generally established with the support of large industrial pharmaceutical companies, directly serving consumers by reducing intermediate distribution links, thereby making drug prices more affordable. Notably, DTP pharmacies are primarily located near Grade A tertiary hospitals to facilitate the acceptance of prescriptions flowing out from these institutions.

The newly opened DTP pharmacy by Jianke is located next to Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, serving the Dongchuan Community in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou. Upon entering, one notices a minimalist design with a strong technological ambiance. The pharmacy offers a comprehensive selection of over 8,000 medications. In addition to conventional Chinese and Western medicines, it provides adjunctive therapeutic products beyond pure pharmaceuticals, such as rehabilitation equipment and health supplements. Notably, the store has introduced various new and specialized drugs, orphan drugs, and hospital-formulary medications, including antineoplastic agents, hepatology drugs, and HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) medications. It also offers home delivery services, significantly saving residents' time when purchasing medications.

The pharmacy is divided into multiple functional areas, including a remote consultation zone, sections for various Western and traditional Chinese medicines, a pharmacist service area, cold-chain cabinets, a cool-storage zone, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) zone, and a decoction room. It also features a dedicated section for large medical devices and provides free services such as height and weight measurement, blood glucose and blood pressure monitoring, TCM slicing and powdering, and herbal decoction preparation. Whether in terms of the location selection for its Direct-to-Patient (DTP) pharmacy or the variety of medications offered, the Jianke Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital Dongchuan Road Internet Retail Pharmacy delivers the most convenient and comprehensive services to the general public.

Technology Empowers Chronic Disease Management, Making Medication Purchases and Consultations Easier

It is worth noting that, in order to provide more targeted health management services to patients, the resident registered physicians at this pharmacy can establish and maintain health records for customers purchasing medications. They offer professional medication counseling and lifestyle guidance based on individual treatment histories, thereby facilitating a transition from “selling treatments” to “delivering health.”

As a smart pharmacy operating under an internet-based model, the Jianke Internet Retail Pharmacy at the Dongchuan Road branch of Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital offers citizens not only cutting-edge experiences such as WeChat facial recognition payment, online medication ordering, and remote consultations, but also seamless connectivity to Jianke’s flagship telemedicine product—the Jianke Doctor APP—via in-store smart interactive devices, leveraging Jianke’s robust internet healthcare system. Through this integration, patients can engage in real-time video consultations with physicians from top-tier (Grade A tertiary) hospitals across China registered on the platform, thereby accessing high-quality medical resources nationwide provided by Jianke.

In addition to in-store medications, Jianke offers an online selection of 680,000 SKUs, with same-day delivery available for local orders, enabling the general public to enjoy a “one-stop” medical service experience and avoid the hassles of cumbersome registration, follow-up visits, queuing, and medication pickup.

Xie Fangmin, CEO of Jianke, stated that DTP (Direct-to-Patient) pharmacies represent a key strategic initiative for Jianke. The company will continuously enhance its professional capabilities and strengthen supply chain management to boost the competitiveness of its pharmacy operations, establishing them as a robust pillar within Jianke’s closed-loop medical ecosystem. Currently, Jianke has established deep strategic partnerships with more than 500 renowned pharmaceutical companies both domestically and internationally, enabling direct drug supply and creating a rapid and secure medication procurement channel to better meet the clinical medication needs of hospitals and patients. He emphasized that, through DTP pharmacies, Jianke aims to provide greater patient access to newly imported specialty drugs in the future, thereby benefiting people across China.

In addition to continuously expanding its offline pharmacy network, Jianke is intensifying its efforts in internet hospitals to accelerate the advancement of chronic disease management projects, vigorously promoting the “Internet + Healthcare” development strategy and comprehensively positioning itself within the broader health industry. Currently, Jianke operates dozens of physical pharmacies, including seven DTP (Direct-to-Patient) pharmacies, in Guangzhou, Dongguan, Chongqing, Wuhan, and other cities. It has obtained medical practice licenses for three internet hospitals: Dongguan Taixin Jianke Internet Hospital, Guangzhou Jingtai Jianke Internet Hospital, and Jianke Internet Hospital affiliated with Tumxuk City People’s Hospital in Xinjiang. These platforms enable a range of services, including remote online consultations, electronic prescription issuance, and home delivery of medications. Furthermore, by establishing an integrated online-offline infrastructure, Jianke is accelerating the development of multiple chronic disease management programs to actively provide patients with more personalized chronic disease management solutions.

Nowadays, Jianke’s chronic disease management initiatives are advancing toward greater specialization and refinement, with frequent strategic moves. In May this year, Jianke partnered with Ferring Pharmaceuticals, a renowned international pharmaceutical company, to establish the Internet Hospital Center of Excellence for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Professor Wu Xiaoping, a professor in the Department of Gastroenterology at the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University and Deputy Leader of the IBD Specialist Group under the Chinese Society of Gastroenterology, was appointed as the Director of Jianke’s Internet Hospital IBD Center of Excellence. In July of the same year, the Jianke Internet Hospital Men’s Health Management Service Center was officially launched, with Professor Mo Suilin from the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University serving as its Senior Advisor.
