Call for Innovations: Top 10 Cardiovascular Technology Breakthroughs in China 2019

Aug 12, 2019 18:32 CST Updated 18:32

In the 1950s, the first spacecraft was launched into space, yet at that time, heart surgery was considered impossible by some. The heart beats 70 times per minute, pumping five liters of blood through a vascular network spanning a total length of 96,000 kilometers. This rhythm, symbolic of life itself, represented an insurmountable barrier for surgeons.

In 1954, American cardiac surgeon C. Walton Lillehei pioneered the technique of cross-circulation. In 1958, the heart-lung machine was successfully developed and promoted for clinical application, ultimately breaking through the inherent bottleneck in cardiac surgery.

In 1957, Kolff and Akutsu in the United States implanted a polyvinyl chloride artificial heart into a dog, which survived for 1.5 hours, marking the beginning of worldwide research on artificial hearts. In 1969, Cooley et al. first implanted a total artificial heart (TAH) into a human as a bridge to heart transplantation, initiating the clinical application of TAH.

Cardiac surgery is the most recently established subspecialty among all surgical disciplines. In just 70 years, physicians have achieved repeated breakthroughs through imaginative approaches combined with innovations in medical devices and materials, continuously rewriting the history of cardiac surgery. Standing on the shoulders of giants, amidst the rapid advancement of biomedical and information technologies, we may witness even more groundbreaking innovations.

With the rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases, continuous advancements in surgical techniques and concepts, and steady improvements in both the volume and outcomes of surgeries, cardiac surgery in China has entered a new era of rapid development. To promote the ongoing advancement of the discipline of cardiac surgery in China and foster innovative integration among industry, academia, research, and clinical practice, the Cardiac Surgery Professional Committee of the China Medical Education Association, the Cardiac Surgery Professional Committee of the China Medical Biotechnology Association, and VCBeat have jointly launched “Starting from the Heart — Call for Entries: Top 10 Cardiovascular Technology Innovation Cases in China (2019)“Activities targeting medical institutions at all levels and companies in the medical device, pharmaceutical, and service sectors to widely collect case studies of technological innovations in cardiac surgery. These cases will be thoroughly analyzed for their methodologies, approaches, and outcomes, with lessons summarized to provide references for promoting innovation in medical science and technology, improving healthcare quality, safety, and efficiency, and advancing technical standards in cardiac surgery.”

Empowering Outstanding Cases Across Four Key Dimensions to Support the Innovative Forces of the Future

Outstanding cases will be invited for exclusive interviews with VCBeat and featured in the “Cardiovascular Technology Innovation” article series, with promotion across the VCBeat website, event website, and media matrix.

Representatives of select outstanding case studies will be invited to deliver thematic presentations, gaining opportunities to connect with clinical resources and industry capital, thereby facilitating multi-dimensional, multi-stage collaborations.

The ten outstanding cases will be awarded the honorary title of “Xin Xin Cup” and invited to attend the award ceremony at the “FTC2019 China Frontier Technologies Forum in Cardiac Surgery.”

Over nearly three months, seeking innovative case studies in cardiac surgery technology

● Case Submission: August 12–September 27

● Online Display (Publishing Cases via Website or WeChat Official Account): September 2 – October 14

● Expert Review Meeting: October 14

● Announcement of the list of recommended cases: October 15

● On-site Presentation of Typical Cases: November 9–10

Doctors’ Imagination + Technological Innovation = ∞; Medical Institutions, Research Institutes, and Innovative Enterprises Are All Welcome to Apply

The event is open to cardiac surgery departments and related disciplines in medical institutions of all levels and types across China, research institutions such as medical schools, and innovative enterprises in the fields of medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare services.

Including but not limited to the following scope:

● Covers cardiovascular disease prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and health management;

● Covers subspecialties including aortic, coronary, valvular, congenital heart disease, and end-stage heart disease, as well as supporting departments such as anesthesiology, extracorporeal circulation, intensive care, ultrasound, and imaging;

● Innovative technologies applied in clinical medicine, basic research, and healthcare services.

Expert Review Panel: Evaluation Across Three Dimensions—Innovation, Value, and Industrialization

Submit case content focusing on innovations in cutting-edge technologies, devices, or materials in cardiovascular surgery, including: case summary, problem addressed, data details, key technologies, outcomes and effectiveness, and next steps. The specific content requirements are as follows:

● Clear thinking. Provides a detailed description centered on cases of technological innovation, with distinct and clear viewpoints and scientifically feasible solutions. Specifies concrete application plans.

● Novel content. Reflecting new concepts and technologies, fully exploring innovations in cardiac surgery procedures or industrial technology applications.

● Significant results. Describe the outcomes or benefits achieved in medical practice or management. Analyze the current limitations of the case and outline the next steps for improvement.

A panel of 30 academic and industry experts, jointly selected by the Cardiac Surgery Professional Committee of the China Medical Education Association, the Cardiac Surgery Professional Committee of the Chinese Medicine Biotechnology Engineering Association, and VCBeat Eggshell Research Institute, evaluated cases across three dimensions: innovation, value, and academic translation/industrialization, focusing on key technologies, outcomes, and applications.
