Medical Device Developer
Recently, VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) learned from foreign media reports that medical device company Spectral MD announced the completion of a $27 million financing round (the specific round was not disclosed). The investor in this financing is the U.S. government agency Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).
Spectral MD plans to use the funds from this financing round to develop DeepView, an AI-driven wound imaging system primarily used for diagnosing burn patients and helping to improve their clinical outcomes. Additionally, Spectral MD will conduct clinical trials of DeepView for diagnosing conditions such as amputation, critical limb ischemia (CLI), and diabetic foot ulcers.
Spectral MD, founded in 2009 and headquartered in Texas, USA, is a clinical-stage medical device company. The company primarily develops AI-powered wound imaging systems to improve treatment outcomes for burn patients. Spectral MD is one of the first startups to apply computer vision to medical diagnostics.
Spectral MD primarily develops the DeepView medical diagnostic device based on multispectral imaging technology. This device records the wavelengths of light reflected by tissues and analyzes their chemical composition to identify pathological tissues that are difficult to distinguish with the naked eye. DeepView is a non-invasive detection system integrated with deep learning algorithms, currently used mainly to differentiate between healthy and pathological tissues in burn patients, thereby helping surgeons improve treatment efficiency and reduce the risks associated with skin grafting procedures.
Furthermore, DeepView is capable of addressing severe burns and mass casualty incidents. For instance, in accidents such as fires or nuclear radiation events that are prone to causing large-scale casualties, thousands of patients with severe burns may simultaneously require skin grafting procedures. DeepView’s advanced diagnostic technology assists physicians in rapidly assessing patient conditions to facilitate timely treatment.
DeepView has received FDA Breakthrough Device designation. Clinical trials have demonstrated that the device significantly accelerates imaging of human burn tissue, with a diagnostic error rate of 5%, substantially lower than the misdiagnosis rate associated with manual assessment.
Dr. J. Michael DiMaio, CEO of Spectral MD, stated, “DeepView is an advanced medical diagnostic device that analyzes tissue characteristics to determine the extent of damage without the need for palpation. This portable device provides physicians with rapid, real-time analytical results with greater accuracy than manual diagnosis. We are delighted that BARDA supports Spectral MD’s growth, helping us accelerate the development of our medical diagnostic devices.”
