22-Year-Old Guitar-Wielding Volunteer Completes Two Years of Music-Focused Teaching in Remote Daliang Mountains

"Grand Chorus of Teachers and Students"

This shy young man, hailing from Shandong Province and born in 1997, has been serving as a volunteer teacher at Baqian Primary School in the Daliang Mountains for two years. He arrived with his beloved guitar in tow. Today, music has become the most vibrant highlight of this school nestled deep within the mountains.

The following are my naked-eye observations; most of the images and videos were taken by myself:

Moments

This is a WeChat Moments-based community exclusively focused on healthcare.

There are genetic testing kits for sale.

There are drug sellers.

There are medical device vendors.

There are entrepreneurs

There are investors.

Formed an impromptu group due to a WeChat Moments post

The two core initiators are these individuals.

Jin Ge, a stunning beauty both in photos and in real life, is the CEO of Rendong Medicine, specializing in tumor immunotherapy.

Yet in the mountains of Daliangshan, she traverses hills and waters as if walking on flat ground.

Feng Zhiqing, CEO of Weishidun, specializes in hospital cold chain logistics.

After arriving in Xichang, he drove the entire way; everyone can get a feel for these mountain roads.

Road to School

Both are entrepreneurs who have been engaged in volunteer teaching charity work in the Daliang Mountains for several years, and they are very familiar with these mountain roads.

A Teacher Who Has Persisted in Teaching in a Mountain Village for 16 Years

The first school visited: Wawu Primary School

The scenery is exceptionally beautiful, and the campus is also very picturesque.

Only after asking did I find out

This teacher, named Qubi Shigu, is a recipient of the Jack Ma Rural Teacher Award.

It took him a full 16 years to transform the school into what it is today.

They have their own football team and their own football field.

Football Matches at High Altitudes

The school has become the largest in the surrounding area.

But the greatest distress still stems from the teacher; he is the only full-time teacher in the entire school.

The rest are volunteer teachers.

Qu Bishigu is a local who returned to his hometown after graduating from university.

Speaking of the school’s current scale, he expressed great pride and a strong desire for its continued growth.

The chubby Xiao Qu Bi in 1997

The video at the beginning features him, whose real name is Qu Zequan and who is referred to here as Qu Bi.

This child, born in 1997, comes from Qingdao, Shandong.

With a guitar in hand, I plunged into this small mountain village—Baqian Primary School

His dream is to bring music and the outside world to children in the mountains.

"Until now, he has been very shy when tuning his instrument and singing."

When everyone starts singing in unison, he gets excited and sings one song after another.

Now, he is forming a band for the children.

Ba Qian Primary School is gradually transforming into Ba Qian Arts School.

The young boy Qubi has also become a true man.

Eldest Sister

The final stop of this trip was the most challenging school, Naizuku Primary School.

It was also the first school managed by Zhiqing and Jin Ge.

Fu Yuanyuan, the team leader at the school and a volunteer teacher from Nanjing, is affectionately known as “Big Sister” by everyone.

Because she not only managed the school but also took care of every volunteer teacher.

She mobilized nearly all her resources.

In many local families, girls do not have the habit of wearing underwear; she mobilized her friends to raise donations.

The school is located far from the town, so she strives to find ways to ensure that everyone can have meat once a week.

At this school with the most arduous conditions, our group was deeply impressed by the strong sense of responsibility demonstrated by its teachers.

The math teacher, whose student ranked third in the entire township, pursued the student to provide extra tutoring.

The students have learned many dances, and they affectionately hug their teachers while talking to them.

Secretary-General

Finally, I would like to introduce one more person.

The specific organizer of this event, Chun Yue, is also the Secretary-General of the Public Welfare Foundation.

Actually, she is also a young woman born in the 1990s.

"Shortly after graduation, I embarked on the path of public welfare."

Dedicated to the Greater Liangshan Mountains for Five Years

On the verge of becoming an old maid, yet whenever she sees the teacher and the child

You can call her "No Regrets."

A foreign media outlet previously produced a special feature on China: “What Are China’s Young People Doing?”

After interviewing Chunyue, they realized that many young Chinese people of the new generation have already become the new bearers of responsibility.

Along the journey, I reflected that more than a decade ago, those engaged in public welfare work were predominantly Europeans and Americans.

Now, young people in China are also on the move.

A recorded sentence

Over the course of the three-day itinerary, there were many moving moments, but what touched me most profoundly was a remark made by a volunteer teacher at the final school we visited:

"When I first decided to become a volunteer teacher in rural areas, I was driven by this belief: although our education may not enable every child to gain admission to university or achieve prominent social status, what matters most is that we can help broaden their horizons, expose them to the wider world, and cultivate their capacity for lifelong learning. In this way, when they grow into adulthood, they will no longer isolate themselves due to lack of education as the previous generation did; instead, they will be empowered to equip the next generation with greater knowledge and change their own destinies."

What can we do?

In 2014, when Da Tao and I were planning to establish VCBeat

We Have an Agreement

If We Are Fortunate Enough to Survive

“Do something meaningful; public welfare is a highly meaningful endeavor.”

Fortunately, we have survived and are able to contribute to innovation in the healthcare industry.

Now, we should also do something for society.

Zhiqing once said something that left a deep impression on me: “I used to think I needed to achieve success before engaging in philanthropy. Now I realize that as long as you are willing, you can contribute to the public good at any time, and every action will resonate.”

Therefore, VCBeat has joined forces with the Baichuan Public Welfare Fund, initiated by Feng Zhiqing and Jin Ge, to contribute to volunteer teaching programs. A single volunteer teacher can potentially impact dozens, or even hundreds, of children in mountainous regions.

Currently, Baichuan Public Welfare is launching two campaigns on the Tencent Public Welfare Platform. Friends are welcome to participate, and even more encouraged to conduct field visits, engage with the dedicated volunteer teachers, and witness the children’s bright and hopeful world.
