Cardiac Device R&D Manufacturer
On August 29, 2019, VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) learned from foreign media reports that medical device company ZOLL Medical (ZOLL) announced the acquisition of Cardiac Science (Cardiac). Specific financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
Upon completion of this acquisition, Cardiac Science will join ZOLL’s Resuscitation Division, located in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, USA. ZOLL plans to further develop cardiac arrest emergency response solutions, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and the PlusTrac program management solution.
Cardiac Science, founded in 1991 and headquartered in Wisconsin, USA, is a medical device company. The company primarily develops, manufactures, and sells automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and related components, providing life-saving equipment to healthcare professionals to help save the lives of patients experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It also offers comprehensive training, equipment maintenance, and other services to its AED customers. Cardiac Science operates in North America, Europe, and Asia, with more than 500,000 medical devices deployed in nearly 100 countries worldwide.
Cardiac Science’s flagship product is the Powerheart G5 AED (Powerheart), designed for treating patients with sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). The device features an intuitive and user-friendly interface, enabling rescuers to respond quickly and confidently to sudden cardiac arrest emergencies. The Powerheart can store rescue data for up to 90 minutes, which is displayed via the AED Manager software, significantly improving the efficiency of rescue and treatment operations.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a severe condition caused by the sudden loss of heart function, leading to insufficient blood supply to vital organs. Each year, more than 350,000 people in the United States die from SCA, making it one of the leading causes of unexpected death worldwide. Timely intervention is critical for SCA patients; without cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and early defibrillation, the chance of survival decreases by 10% with every passing minute.
ZOLL, founded in 1980 and headquartered in Massachusetts, USA, is a medical technology company. As a subsidiary of the Asahi Kasei Group, it primarily develops and markets medical devices and software solutions designed to enhance clinical and emergency care efficiency in healthcare institutions, thereby saving patients’ lives. ZOLL offers products such as defibrillation monitoring, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) support, data management, and temperature management systems, assisting clinicians, fire professionals, and lay rescuers in treating patients requiring resuscitation and emergency care.
Elijah A. White, President of ZOLL, stated, “We are delighted to partner with Cardiac Science. This acquisition aligns closely with ZOLL’s vision of providing innovative emergency care solutions for all. We believe that through the collaboration between ZOLL and Cardiac Science, we can save more lives of cardiac arrest patients in emergency situations.”
Elijah A. White added, “Both Cardiac Science and ZOLL provide proven AED solutions for the public safety market. With the addition of Cardiac Science, we will be able to offer customers a more robust AED management infrastructure to ensure timely rescue for patients.”
