Cardiac Monitoring Device Provider
On September 11, 2019, VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) learned from foreign media reports that Baxter International announced the acquisition of biotechnology company Cheetah Medical (“Cheetah”) for $230 million. The transaction includes $190 million in upfront cash and $40 million in additional contingent payments. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.
Following the completion of this acquisition, Baxter will continue to develop Cheetah Medical’s patient monitoring devices, providing medical centers with mature patient monitoring technologies to improve clinical outcomes.
Cheetah Medical, founded in 2000 and headquartered in Massachusetts, USA, is a biotechnology and medical device company. The company is dedicated to developing monitoring devices for critically ill patients to improve clinical outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. Cheetah Medical also works closely with clinicians to advance the research and development of advanced medical devices.
Cheetah’s CHEETAH Starling SV fluid management system is specifically designed for intensive care units, operating rooms, and emergency departments. The system enables patient fluid management by providing real-time assessment of fluid administration and loss, thereby assisting clinicians in formulating optimized treatment plans. Additionally, the CHEETAH Starling SV serves as a non-invasive hemodynamic monitoring system capable of real-time monitoring of patients’ hemodynamic status.
Fluid management is an essential medical intervention in intensive care units (ICUs), emergency departments, and major surgeries, and it is particularly critical for the treatment of patients with organ failure, deep coma, and other severe acute conditions. Critically ill patients are prone to developing dilutional anemia, hypovolemia, and hypotension during prolonged treatment. Healthcare providers should not rely solely on laboratory test results, such as complete blood counts and electrolyte analyses, to guide therapy; instead, they must implement measures such as fluid resuscitation based on the patient’s actual clinical condition.
A study by the University of Kansas Medical Center demonstrates that effective fluid management reduces the risk associated with mechanical ventilation, shortens ICU length of stay, and lowers healthcare costs, mortality rates, and the risk of complications.
Cheetah’s technology facilitates the transition of fluid management from manual documentation to a data-driven approach, enabling tailored management strategies based on individual patient needs. By integrating drug delivery technology with patient monitoring systems, the company’s products assist clinicians in managing patients with sepsis, acute kidney injury (AKI), and other critical conditions. Currently, Cheetah’s fluid management system has been exported to nearly 30 countries worldwide and is adopted by more than 400 hospitals.
Baxter, founded in 1931 and headquartered in Illinois, USA, is a global leader in biotechnology. The company is primarily engaged in the research and development of medical devices, innovative technologies, and therapies, providing new treatment options for patients with hemophilia, immune system disorders, infectious diseases, kidney diseases, and other acute and chronic conditions. Baxter went public on the New York Stock Exchange in January 1978, under the ticker symbol BAX.
Baxter comprises three divisions: BioScience, Medication Delivery, and Renal, primarily manufacturing intravenous solutions, novel drug delivery devices, and hemodialysis products. Millions of patients and healthcare professionals worldwide rely on Baxter’s products for critical care, nutrition therapy, kidney disease management, and surgical procedures. With specialized medical expertise and extensive experience in medical product research and development, Baxter is committed to driving innovation and transformation in the next generation of the healthcare industry.
David Ferguson, General Manager of Pharmaceutical R&D at Baxter, stated, “Our mission is to optimize treatment processes and provide personalized healthcare to patients. Cheetah Medical boasts a professional R&D team specializing in fluid management devices. This acquisition will accelerate Baxter’s development in the fields of critical care monitoring and health monitoring, thereby saving more lives.”
“Cheetah Medical’s President and CEO, Chris Hutchison, stated: ‘Our products help clinicians refine treatment plans, improve healthcare efficiency, and enhance patient outcomes. We are delighted to become part of Baxter, which will accelerate the clinical development and global commercialization of Cheetah’s monitoring devices, enabling us to deliver high-quality care to patients.’”
