Microbial Health Sciences Company
On November 11, 2019, VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) learned that microbial health science company Deerland Probiotics&Enzymes announced the acquisition of Bifodan A / S. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Following this acquisition, Bifodan will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Deerland. Scott Ravech of Deerland will continue to serve as Chief Executive Officer, overseeing the global operations of the newly merged company. Steen Andersen, the current CEO of Bifodan, has been appointed President of Deerland Probiotics & Enzymes International for the combined entity and will be responsible for the Hundested facility and all activities outside the Americas.
Deerland, founded in 1990 and headquartered in Kennesaw, Georgia, USA, is a leading formulator and contract manufacturer of enzyme-based dietary supplements. The company is dedicated to developing science-backed solutions utilizing probiotics, prebiotics, and enzyme technologies to promote customer health. It offers a portfolio of unique, clinically supported branded ingredients, including DE111®, PreforPro®, ProHydrolase®, Solarplast®, and Glutalytic®.
Unlike the early development of the enzyme supplement market, Deerland has rejected the “one-size-fits-all” product formulation concept. Instead of simply reformulating the same base enzymes into different products by altering combinations and activities, Deerland has chosen to innovatively leverage complementary technologies to provide customized solutions for its customers. The company believes that, given the wide variability in enzyme functions, enzyme formulations—as well as natural ingredients such as probiotics and prebiotics—can be tailored to address differences in digestive systems, age, gender, and other factors.
Deerland collaborates with clients to co-develop custom formulations, enabling them to achieve targeted performance advantages. The company engages with clients during the early conceptual stages of product development and makes substantial investments to ensure a comprehensive understanding of their needs, thereby tailoring solutions to meet each client’s specific requirements.
In 2010, Deerland formed a joint product development alliance with Thione International, a medical technology company dedicated to developing enzyme-based applications by leveraging a powerful portfolio of synergistic technologies, thereby creating highly innovative digestive and antioxidant formulations. Deerland has also established alliances with leading universities, collaborating on clinical research by harnessing the specific expertise of each academic institution.
Bifodan, established in 1992 and headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, is a life sciences company specializing in the development, manufacturing, and distribution of premium probiotic products, including proprietary dietary supplements, medical devices, and over-the-counter medications. These products are manufactured in GMP-certified production facilities. Bifodan boasts a long-standing heritage in probiotics; the company was originally founded by Denmark’s first dairy company with the aim of isolating Lactobacillus acidophilus. Since 1992, Bifodan has been dedicated to the research and development of probiotic nutritional supplements.
Deerland and Bifodan are both committed to providing innovative, scientifically sound formulations and development services. This acquisition of Bifodan will enable Deerland to expand its global influence.
Ravech stated, “We believe this investment will enable us to deliver greater value to our customers and the enzyme and probiotics industry. As leaders in their respective markets, Deerland and Bifodan can benefit both our employees and customers by combining their expertise.”
Andersen said, “We are delighted to join Deerland and have high hopes for the future. We look forward to leveraging our company’s comprehensive capabilities to help build a robust global enterprise.”
