RNBioDental: Digitally Empowering the Dental Implant Ecosystem Without Disrupting Existing Players

Oral healthcare services have long been dominated by dental clinics, a model dictated by the incidence and clinical characteristics of oral diseases. Small, flexible urban dental clinics are widely distributed in densely populated residential communities, providing residents with a wide range of oral healthcare services. In addition, dental departments in general hospitals and specialized dental hospitals have also experienced rapid development in recent years.

In reality, there is significant variation in the financial performance of different oral healthcare service providers. Some foreign-invested and joint-venture clinics achieve strong profitability due to their access to a specific high-spending clientele and effective marketing strategies. Public oral healthcare institutions often benefit from perceived “authority” and government funding support, resulting in sound financial performance. In contrast, many newly established large private dental clinics or small dental practices have not yet built a stable customer base or achieved economies of scale, with some even operating at a loss.

For private dental clinics, in addition to coping with rising management costs, they must also contend with stringent and cumbersome inspections by regulatory authorities, as well as increasingly fierce competition among peers. This has spurred the emergence of third-party management and marketing consulting firms specializing in dental healthcare management. Nevertheless, the quality of medical services remains the fundamental basis for the survival and success of private dental clinics.

Ruiningbai'er is dedicated to providing dental clinics with comprehensive dental implant products and related denture restoration services through digital means. It also addresses various needs such as personnel training for dental clinics and dental laboratories, treatment plan management, and intraoperative navigation, thereby compensating for the shortage of oral health professionals in China, integrating the dental implant industry chain, and improving the quality of medical services.

From an Oral Medical Device Company to a Smart Oral Health Technology Company

Ruinibayer was established in December 2017 and is currently a wholly foreign-owned enterprise, located in the Optics Valley High-Tech Development Zone of Wuhan, Hubei Province. The founding team of Ruinibayer hails from Switzerland, the United States, and Taiwan. Dr. Hans Dutler, CEO and Founder, graduated from the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. With 30 years of experience in international market development and product R&D, he specializes in innovative design for digital dental workflows, as well as the R&D, design, and manufacturing of implant systems and full-arch restorations. Dr. Hans Dutler previously served as the Asian President of a major Swiss implant manufacturer.

Wang Jiahui, Co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer of the company, has over 25 years of experience in cross-border patient education and doctor-patient management, dental clinic operations, as well as medical device regulations and product validation. The company also engages Dr. KT Huang, a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), as its Medical Informatics Advisor. Dr. Huang previously held senior positions including Vice President of Global E-commerce at IBM and Advisor to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), bringing more than two decades of expertise in medical informatics and sales innovation. Joanna, the company’s Chief Technology Officer, specialized in prosthodontics in the United States. She has served as a Senior Dental Technician/Trainer, Technical Director, and General Manager at multiple large-scale denture processing centers and dental chain groups both domestically and internationally, accumulating extensive experience in technical guidance, talent development, medical-technical exchange, and corporate management. Charles, the company’s Chief Operating Officer and a physician, has decades of experience in surgical clinical practice and management within large general hospitals and health administrative departments. He has also held roles such as Management Representative, Deputy General Manager of Human Resources/Administration, and General Manager at several major domestic and international denture companies, demonstrating proven expertise in managing diverse types of enterprises.

Within less than two years of its establishment, Ruiningbai received policy support under Wuhan Optics Valley’s “One Enterprise, One Policy” initiative and became the flagship project for the development of the Optics Valley Dental Industrial Park in the East Lake High-Tech Development Zone. “Initially, our primary focus was on the research, development, and manufacturing of dental implants, as well as the processing of implant-supported dentures,” Wang Jiahui, Co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer at Ruiningbai, told VCBeat. Ruiningbai’s headquarters is located in the United States and was founded in 2001. Between 2003 and 2017, the company successfully completed product testing and clinical validation in Taiwan, Thailand, the Middle East, Europe, and other regions. With a product portfolio exceeding 2,000 items, it can meet the needs of more than half of implant patients throughout the implantation and prosthetic restoration process.

However, Ruining Bayer is not content to remain merely a medical device company. “When dental implant procedures fail, dental clinics often reach out to us to customize new implants or related components based on patient data,” recalled Wang Jiahui. “Through the integration and analysis of this data, we found that there were no quality issues with the implant products themselves; rather, the failures stemmed from inadequate oral health management among patients. For instance, many patients undergoing implant surgery are middle-aged or elderly, some of whom suffer from diabetes. Periodontal disease has become the sixth major complication of diabetes. If we only perform implant surgery without helping patients manage their oral health, these diabetic patients will not achieve satisfactory outcomes. Oral health management has long been a critical gap in services provided by dental clinics and hospitals.”

As a result, after two years of collaborative research and development with Dalian University of Technology, the Reninbay team successfully developed and launched a medical record management system dedicated to patient management, assisting dental clinics and hospitals in managing patients receiving dental implants. Furthermore, the company has established demonstration dental clinics to collaborate with dental clinics or hospitals, providing professional training for dental personnel and patient education.

Leveraging Digital Solutions to Close the Loop in the Dental Implant Industry

“Our dental implant service demonstration clinics differ from conventional dental practices by assuming functions such as the management of chronic oral diseases and dental training. We do not aim to compete for market share, but rather to help dental clinics better serve their patients,” stated Wang Jiahui. Over more than a decade of research, development, and manufacturing of dental implants and dentures, Ruiningbai'er has accumulated extensive experience in medical device R&D, as well as substantial oral health big data and bioinformatics resources, establishing an Oral Health Cloud Platform. The dental service demonstration clinics enhance disease management outcomes by integrating health data to detect and prevent chronic conditions associated with oral health. Meanwhile, these integrated patient health data provide excellent materials for the training of dental professionals. “Leveraging data resources from the cloud platform and employing technologies such as AR and VR, trainee dentists can work with more realistic patient models,” Wang Jiahui explained. Thus, the dental service demonstration clinics serve not only as centers for managing chronic oral health conditions but also as smart training hubs for professional dental personnel.

In the research, development, and manufacturing of medical devices such as dental implants, Ruining Bayer offers services including OEM/ODM production of implant fixtures (artificial tooth roots), abutments, abutment screws, suprastructure crowns, dental bridges, and full-arch dentures. The company also engages in the manufacturing and sales of high-end dental and orthopedic surgical instruments, including international contract manufacturing.

Reninbai plans to establish a demonstration clinic for dental implant services and a smart implant and digital denture manufacturing center in Wuhan. It will provide patient health management services to partner dental hospitals or clinics, while also offering digital and personalized medical device products related to implants and dentures. This aims to help oral healthcare institutions improve the quality of their medical services and enhance their brand influence. The integration of multiple business lines—including physical product sales, oral health management, and dental personnel training—has enabled Reninbai to create a closed-loop ecosystem for the dental implant industry within the highly fragmented oral healthcare sector.

“All core products have completed international product testing and clinical validation; what we need to do is implement this system in Wuhan,” said Wang Jiahui.

Currently, Ruining Baier is undergoing a new round of financing. The funds will be used for international technology licensing, patent and trademark applications in China, the establishment of digital denture centers and implant processing centers, and the construction of demonstration clinics for dental implant services.
