The China Summit on Outbound Themed Travel and Medical Tourism Will Grandly Open in Shanghai on January 15, 2020.

In recent years, with the upgrading of domestic tourism consumption, the maturity of the outbound themed tourism market has gradually increased. A growing number of middle-class families have consciously turned their attention to this sector. In 2017, China’s outbound tourism expenditure reached approximately $258 billion, accounting for 19.2% of the global market share, making China the country with the highest outbound tourism spending for six consecutive years. Meanwhile, the number of Chinese outbound travelers has continued to grow, exceeding 149 million in 2018, a year-on-year increase of 14.7%. Regarding the motivations behind Chinese tourists’ overseas travel, the previous sightseeing- and shopping-oriented approach has been gradually replaced by a pursuit of immersive destination experiences. As the emerging force in outbound tourism, the post-95 generation places particular emphasis on the uniqueness and cultural depth of travel activities and experiences. It is evident that nature exploration tours are gaining popularity in China, while outbound study tours are becoming increasingly hot. Whether it involves attending sports events abroad or participating in experiential sports tourism such as marathons, skiing, cycling, and RV travel, repeat purchase behavior has already emerged.

In the realm of medical tourism, China sees over 500,000 outbound medical travelers annually, with expenditures on treatment and travel exceeding $10 billion. Health has become a top priority for affluent Chinese households. For hospitals, clinics, and service providers in Southeast Asia, Europe, and the United States, China’s medical tourism market represents a high-potential, high-margin opportunity. The rapid growth of outbound medical tourism from China is primarily driven by wealth, aging demographics, and lifestyle-related diseases.

Relevant studies indicate that by 2020, the number of Chinese outbound medical tourists will approach 900,000. The majority of medical trips are for relatively minor treatments, such as cosmetic surgery, health check-ups, and rehabilitation programs. However, by 2020, it is estimated that nearly 100,000 patients will travel abroad for treatment of serious conditions, particularly cardiovascular diseases, oncology, and neurological disorders, as well as for fertility treatments, obstetrics and gynecology, joint replacement, ophthalmology, and various other surgical procedures.

The vast majority of Chinese patients seeking medical care abroad travel to Asian destinations, particularly South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, and Malaysia. Meanwhile, the United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Singapore are regarded as high-quality options for treating life-threatening conditions such as neurological and cardiovascular diseases, as well as cancer. However, the market is complex and multifaceted; international healthcare institutions must not only present compelling value propositions tailored to precise customer segments but also establish partnerships with appropriate local channel or marketing partners.

Against this backdrop, the China Summit on Outbound Themed Travel and Medical Tourism will be held in Shanghai on January 15, 2020. The event will attract more than 800 senior representatives from over 50 countries, spanning the entire industry chain. Attendees will include executives from globally renowned online travel agencies (OTAs), brick-and-mortar travel agencies, tourism destinations, world-class medical institutions, medical tourism intermediaries, national medical tourism promotion boards, as well as travel technology and service companies and investment firms.

This summit will provide you with a platform to explore the Chinese outbound travel and medical tourism markets, as well as to facilitate mutual learning and exchange among industry peers. A small-scale exhibition will be held concurrently with the conference. Finally, our expert committee will conduct a comprehensive review of the industry, recognizing and awarding the most outstanding enterprises and individuals. Through this event, you will deepen your understanding of China’s outbound themed travel market, gain access to relevant policies and domestic and international industry insights, and secure a competitive edge in the outbound themed travel market!
