On November 24, the national launch ceremony for the Electronic Medical Insurance Certificate was held in Jinan, Shandong Province. The Electronic Medical Insurance Certificate serves as the sole identity credential for online medical insurance services across China. As an authorized channel certified by the National Healthcare Security Administration, WeChat has rolled out the initial release of the national Electronic Medical Insurance Certificate in provinces including Hebei, Heilongjiang, Fujian, and Shandong. Starting today, residents in selected cities within these provinces will be able to gradually activate and use the certificate via WeChat.

Insured individuals can activate their electronic medical insurance credentials by searching for the "My Medical Insurance" WeChat Official Account via WeChat Search or by accessing WeChat City Services. By using the medical insurance code, they can enjoy convenient online medical insurance services, including payment for medical consultations and medication purchases, medical insurance inquiries, and handling of medical insurance affairs, thereby achieving the goal of "one code in hand, worry-free medical insurance."

The Electronic Medical Insurance Certificate is uniformly issued by the National Healthcare Security Administration Information Platform. It serves as an electronic identity verification medium for all insured individuals, generated based on the fundamental medical insurance information database. This certificate offers prominent advantages, including convenience and efficiency, diverse application scenarios, nationwide applicability, and robust security safeguards.

According to relevant officials from the National Healthcare Security Administration, the Electronic Medical Insurance Certificate serves as the unique identifier for insured individuals within the Medical Security Information Platform and is the key to unlocking online medical insurance services. Compared with physical cards or other electronic cards, the Electronic Medical Insurance Certificate has four prominent advantages. First, it is convenient and efficient. The certificate does not rely on a physical card; insured individuals can activate and use it through the National Medical Insurance APP or via third-party channels authorized by the National Healthcare Security Administration, such as WeChat. Second, it offers diverse application scenarios. The Electronic Medical Insurance Certificate is widely used in various contexts, including medical insurance inquiries, enrollment registration, and reimbursement payments, with a single electronic certificate serving all medical insurance business scenarios. Third, it is valid nationwide. Generated uniformly by the National Medical Insurance Information Platform, the certificate adheres to national standards and is mutually recognized across regions, allowing insured individuals to handle relevant medical insurance businesses anywhere in China, truly embodying the concept of “one code in hand, worry-free medical insurance.” Fourth, it is more secure. The Electronic Medical Insurance Certificate employs real-name and real-person verification, utilizes domestically produced encryption algorithms, ensures encrypted data transmission, and displays dynamic QR codes, thereby safeguarding personal information and the security of medical insurance fund usage.

By activating the electronic medical insurance certificate on WeChat, insured individuals can access medical insurance payment and inquiry services for medical visits and medication purchases. At hospitals, users can scan a QR code via WeChat to pay for medical insurance registration and consultation fees, reducing the need to queue at service counters and saving an average of 43.6 minutes in waiting time per user. At pharmacies, users can present their medical insurance code from WeChat for quick mobile scanning, eliminating the hassle of handling cash change or swiping cards. Furthermore, details of every medical insurance transaction can be easily queried, providing greater transparency and security.

In the future, as functionalities are further enhanced, more medical insurance service scenarios—such as enrollment registration and reimbursement payments—can be handled through a single electronic certificate, easily accessible via WeChat.
