FTC2019 | Neusoft: How Information Technology Empowers Critical Care Department Construction

Dec 11, 2019 11:13 CST Updated 11:13

Recently, the 2019 China Cardiac Surgery Frontier Technology Forum was held in Beijing. The forum brought together top cardiac surgery experts from Beijing Anzhen Hospital, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, West China Hospital, Wuhan Asia Heart Hospital, and Xijing Hospital. It also invited distinguished guests from the investment community, industry, and research institutions to jointly discuss the development history, current status, and future trends of cardiac surgery in China.

Among them, Mr. Zhang Chunlong, Deputy General Manager of the Clinical Medical Division under Neusoft Medical Solutions Business Group, delivered a speech themed “Empowering ICU Development through Health Informatics.” VCBeat has compiled and edited the highlights of his presentation.

Neusoft Corporation entered the broader healthcare sector at an early stage, with its business spanning numerous areas including health management, medical insurance, education in health and medical technologies, digital medical equipment, medical big data and artificial intelligence, and informatization for healthcare institutions.

From the perspective of the clinical healthcare segment, Neusoft currently focuses on two key areas: physicians’ diagnostic workflows and critical treatment scenarios in hospitals. At present, Neusoft’s diagnostic portfolio covers comprehensive imaging and laboratory testing product lines, while its therapeutic offerings concentrate on anesthesia and perioperative care, critical care, and dialysis.

Neusoft: Empowering the Development of Intensive Care Units with Information Technology

Critical care scenarios represent a specialized application of hospital information systems. First, continuous monitoring of patients and the diversity of data types result in massive data volumes. Second, due to the unique nature of critical care settings, there are stringent requirements for medical record quality and high sensitivity of information. Third, Intensive Care Units (ICUs) demand higher professional competence from nurses compared to general wards, entailing a longer training cycle for personnel development.

“When we focus on departmental management, medical quality, and safety, information technology serves as a particularly important tool. To leverage it effectively, the first step is to recognize the value of data,” stated Zhang Chunlong. Due to the wide range of sources and strong real-time nature of critical care data, its volume is substantial. Therefore, compared with general clinical data, critical care data holds greater value and exhibits distinct characteristics.

Neusoft’s Comprehensive Smart ICU Solution bridges communication between medical devices and computer systems, integrating traditional nursing practices with digital management workflows. It enables seamless data interoperability across various business systems by automatically acquiring medical data from bedside equipment and other information systems, thereby facilitating intelligent medical documentation and application. This significantly reduces the workload of ICU nurses. Furthermore, the solution supports continuous improvement in nursing quality through retrospective analysis, standardizes nursing procedures, and assists medical staff in achieving precise diagnosis and safe treatment. By leveraging informatics, it shortens the training cycle for ICU nurses, helps managers enhance departmental management capabilities, and empowers the development of critical care units.

In data acquisition, Neusoft has also accumulated extensive experience. Currently, Neusoft’s independently developed IoT connectivity products support over 400 types of devices, enable 24/7 uninterrupted operation, and feature automated operations and maintenance initiation, eliminating the need for manual intervention in data collection.

Neusoft Smart ICU Decision Support Platform: Empowering Critical Care Departments to Enter the Era of Intelligence

Meanwhile, Neusoft has launched an Intelligent Critical Care Decision Support Platform for the healthcare industry, establishing a critical care medicine data center that spans multiple departments and hospital campuses. The company has built an NDI big data knowledge base that integrates all clinical characteristic information for each patient, including physiological data collected in the ICU, physician diagnoses, laboratory test results, microbial culture data, medical imaging, treatment measures, physician orders, fluid intake and output, medical history, and physical signs. It also incorporates various severity-of-illness scores, parameter selections, early warning settings, and critical value models. By integrating these clinical data with treatment plans, Neusoft has created a patient-centric big data knowledge base capable of authentically reconstructing diagnostic and therapeutic scenarios through data. This platform provides medical researchers with broader research insights and offers clinicians a one-stop scientific research platform, thereby enabling data to generate substantial social value.

Leveraging the Critical Care Medical Data Center to establish a critical care clinical data warehouse, we have developed a knowledge base system centered on intelligent patient stratification, rational medication use, resuscitation early warning, and bundled supportive therapy. This system provides real-time alerts to clinical staff, enabling early detection of issues and timely intervention in patient treatment workflows, while offering real-time decision-support tools for clinicians and nurses.

The Neusoft Smart ICU Decision Support Platform builds disease prediction models based on authoritative medical knowledge. It leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically monitor and analyze patients’ conditions, proactively providing diagnostic and treatment recommendations across disease warning, diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis. By employing deep learning to automatically absorb clinicians’ diagnostic and therapeutic expertise, the platform enables continuous autonomous model evolution, serving as an ideal partner for physicians in achieving precise diagnosis and safe treatment.

Neusoft focuses on the field of critical care medicine, adopting a patient-centered approach that encompasses clinical diagnosis and treatment, nursing, scientific research, and management. By deeply integrating critical care medical knowledge with key technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and big data, Neusoft faithfully reconstructs clinical scenarios through data mediation. This empowers healthcare professionals to efficiently conduct clinical research and big data analysis in critical care, offering medical scholars broader research perspectives. It also assists administrators in effectively addressing various managerial challenges, thereby enhancing departmental operational efficiency and management standards. By breaking down data silos and fully unlocking the application value of critical care clinical data, Neusoft facilitates the transition of critical care medicine into the era of intelligent healthcare.
