China’s healthcare sector currently faces challenges such as an accelerating trend of population aging, a growing elderly population with high disease prevalence, increasing medical demands year by year, and imbalanced allocation of medical resources between urban and rural areas. The Outline of the 13th Five-Year Plan proposes advancing the "Healthy China" initiative, explicitly stating that the overall goals of smart healthcare and the health service industry are to comprehensively innovate future health concepts and the medical system through medical informatization.
The rapid development of the internet, artificial intelligence, and 5G technology has swiftly established a patient-centric medical data network, creating healthcare application scenarios such as medical image analysis, health management, and disease prediction. This has propelled the healthcare industry into the era of smart healthcare, ushering in an explosive growth phase for its development.
China’s smart healthcare market is experiencing continuous growth in demand and rapid expansion in scale, having become the world’s third-largest smart healthcare market after the United States and Japan. In 2018, China’s smart healthcare market surpassed RMB 70 billion. With increased national investment in the development of smart healthcare, the market’s sales volume is projected to approach RMB 120 billion by 2020. According to the White Paper on Smart Healthcare, investment in China’s smart healthcare industry is expected to reach RMB 88 billion in 2019 and exceed RMB 100 billion in 2020.
Driven by advancements in smart healthcare technologies and market demands, China’s smart healthcare industry offers substantial growth potential and promising investment prospects. Global and domestic tech giants have long entered and strategically positioned themselves in this sector. IBM launched its Watson project in 2006; Siemens Healthineers, GE Healthcare, and Philips Healthcare have each established dedicated smart healthcare divisions; and companies such as Google, Alibaba, and Tencent are also intensifying their efforts in the field. Among the 2,751 smart healthcare enterprises in China, five major industrial clusters have already taken shape in Beijing, Guangdong, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang.
Driven by national policies and technological advancements, industry giants are continuously entering the market, and capital markets are rapidly positioning themselves—the era of smart healthcare has arrived. As an innovator in the healthcare industry, “smart healthcare” is witnessing rapid development in digital technologies. What is the current state of the industry? Where lie the pain points and opportunities in niche sectors? Where will new solutions and application scenarios take root? How can investors align with trends to facilitate industrial upgrading? How can research, academia, industry, and investment sectors integrate and innovate to drive industrial development?
