Developer of Cardiac Interventional Surgical Robots
VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) has learned that MeiO Medical, a medical technology company, recently completed an angel round of financing worth RMB 10 million. This round was jointly invested by ShunAn Capital, RuiJia Medical Alliance, and several angel investors.
Dr. Chen Yuemeng, founder of Mayo Heart Magnetism, stated that the proceeds from this round of financing will be used for the research and development of prototypes for the cardiac automatic navigation system and related consumables for magnetic catheters.
Mayo Cardio-Mag, established in June 2018 and co-founded by Dr. Chen Yuemeng and Professor Lu Caiyi, Director of the Department of Cardiology at the 301 Hospital, is dedicated to creating novel cardiac automated navigation technologies and developing a magnetically guided navigation platform and magnetic catheter consumables system with independent intellectual property rights.
It is reported that Mayo Heart Magnetism’s production and R&D base is located in the Economic Development Zone of Shangyu District, Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province, while its clinical research is being conducted at the 301 Hospital.Currently, Mayo Heart Magnetics has established its own interventional catheterization laboratory for cardiology research and development, completing the R&D of its core product, the Raphaello surgical robot—a magnetic navigation stereotactic positioning and precise ablation system.
Catheter-based radiofrequency ablation is one of the treatments for arrhythmia, but the procedure is relatively complex, carries a certain risk of complications, and places high demands on the operator’s experience as well as technical equipment. The Raphaello surgical robot—a magnetic navigation stereotactic positioning and precise ablation system—can accurately map and ablate arrhythmogenic foci, reducing the risk of safety-related complications associated with manual ablation to zero.
Notably, Mayo Heart Magnetics’ cardiac automatic navigation system and interventional cardiology surgical robot have recently garnered multiple accolades. As a project under Shaoxing’s “330 Overseas Talent” Program, it not only won the Excellence Award for Startups at the 8th China Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition (Zhejiang Division) and the 6th Zhejiang Provincial “Torch Cup” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, but also claimed the First Prize in the Social Group category at the 10th Shaoxing Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.
Chen Yuemeng noted that cryoablation is one of the preferred treatments for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Accordingly, cryoablation catheters will become a new R&D focus for Mayo Heart Magnetism. In the future, Mayo Heart Magnetism aims to establish a core closed-loop cardiology business encompassing data, diagnosis, and intervention—spanning from arrhythmia monitoring and AI-based arrhythmia diagnosis to interventional procedures.
When discussing the aspects of Mayo Clinic’s magnetocardiography that attract investment firms, Chen Yuemeng primarily highlighted two areas:
A Powerful Core Team. The core team of Mayo CardioMagnetic consists of three parts: an industry team with over a decade of leading expertise in signal processing, electromagnetics, and motor control technologies, led by Chen Yuemeng; a core electromagnetic navigation R&D team led by Professor Huangfu Jiangtao and Professor Chen Hongsheng from Zhejiang University; and an authoritative team of clinicians led by Professor Lu Caiyi, Director of the Department of Cardiology at the 301 Hospital. Mayo CardioMagnetic is dedicated to developing cutting-edge integrated technologies for precise minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment, aiming to minimize the cost of interventional cardiology procedures while enhancing their safety and success rates, thereby making catheter ablation the safest cardiac interventional procedure.
Broad Market Prospects. With the aging of the social age structure, the incidence of arrhythmia is increasing. According to data from the 301 Hospital, the number of patients with arrhythmia in China has exceeded 70 million and is increasing by about 300,000 annually. Among them, 30% of patients require surgical intervention. There is a severe imbalance between the number of cardiologists performing surgeries and the number of patients requiring surgery, making surgical robots highly promising.
These two advantages have also been affirmed by Chen Qiangqiang, founder of Shun’an Investment.
Shun’an Investment has been involved in the entire journey of Mayo Cardio-Mag, from its inception to its growth. Chen Qiangqiang believes that while catheter radiofrequency ablation has long become a standard treatment for arrhythmias internationally, this area remains largely untapped in China, presenting significant potential for future market growth.
“Mayo Heart Magnetism boasts robust technical capabilities. Since its establishment in 2018, the company has completed approximately 70–80% of its planned initiatives within just a year and a half. From R&D and clinical application to product manufacturing, Mayo Heart Magnetism possesses a complete business chain, rendering its goals highly attainable.”
Chen Qiangqiang stated that following this round of financing, Shun’an Investment will leverage its resources in the healthcare sector to continue providing Mayo Cardio-Magnetism with a range of post-investment services, including sales network deployment, development strategy formulation, industry resource integration, and brand influence enhancement. The angel investors will also assist Mayo Cardio-Magnetism in areas such as intellectual property. In this regard, Chen Qiangqiang emphasized that Shun’an Investment remains committed to being a long-term partner that grows alongside its portfolio companies.
