Healthcare Service Institution Operation and Management Provider
On December 5, 2019, VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) learned that healthcare company McLaren Healthcare plans to acquire St. Luke's Hospital in Maumee, Ohio. It is reported that upon completion of this transaction, McLaren will have its first hospital outside of Michigan. McLaren expects its fiscal year 2020 revenue to reach $5.7 billion or more.
McLaren President and CEO Philip Incarnati stated, “Through this transaction, McLaren will become the sole shareholder of St. Luke’s Hospital, and we are committed to making up to $120 million in capital investments in the hospital over the next five years.”
McLaren was founded in 1994 and is headquartered in Grand Blanc, Michigan, USA. The company operates a fully integrated healthcare network dedicated to delivering high-quality, cost-effective patient care. The McLaren system comprises 12 hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, imaging centers, and 450 primary care physicians. Currently, McLaren employs 24,000 staff members and has more than 52,000 network providers.
McLaren operates Michigan’s largest cancer center and healthcare network, anchored by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in the United States, one of only 45 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive centers in the country.
It is reported that, upon completion of the transaction, McLaren will establish a cancer center, an orthopedic center, a neurology center, and a spine center at St. Luke’s; renovate the hospital’s intensive care unit and operating rooms; and fund upgrades to other infrastructure. These plans are expected to be completed by mid-2020, pending approval from the board of directors and regulatory authorities.
“St. Luke’s President and CEO Dan Wakeman stated, ‘This will enable St. Luke’s to deliver high-quality services to its market while also helping to stabilize our financial position.’”
St. Luke, established in 1906 with 300 beds, provides healthcare services to Maumee and its surrounding communities. As an independent hospital, St. Luke offers a wide range of critical care services, including cardiovascular, spine, neurology, orthopedics, and emergency care, and features a nationally certified Stroke Center.
Wakeman stated, “Like other independent hospitals in Midwest urban markets, St. Luke’s also faces financial challenges. We need a large-scale organization to provide the capital necessary to achieve our strategic goal of serving the community.”
Incarnati stated, “We look forward to expanding and enhancing St. Luke Hospital’s services and development plans to uphold its long-standing tradition of providing high-quality medical care to the community. Integrating St. Luke into McLaren will create opportunities for our growth in northwest Ohio. Furthermore, given its proximity to the Michigan market, this integration will also yield operational cost savings and generate new opportunities.”
