In Hangzhou in March 2015, a chilly spring breeze lingered. Gong Shikang, General Manager of North Asia for ORION Rhapsody, an international medical data developer, and his colleagues took their seats along the inner side of the conference room, while Liu Xiaoguang sat opposite them, creating a subtly tense atmosphere.
Outside the conference room, the product launch for ORION Rhapsody was in full swing; inside, a dialogue marked by a “stark imbalance of power” was about to unfold.
One month ago, industry veteran Liu Xiaoguang became a startup novice and established Ruikang Yongchuang.
Before starting his own venture, Liu Xiaoguang served as Regional Technical Manager at Tianjian Yuanda, a long-established healthcare IT company, where he oversaw informatization operations in Central and East China (covering Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Hunan, Hubei, and Jiangxi).
Through interactions with clients and on-site visits to hospitals, it has become evident that hospital information systems designed merely to replace manual labor can no longer meet the emerging needs of healthcare institutions. Liu Xiaoguang firmly believes that refined management, aimed at enhancing medical services and quality, will be a key development direction for the healthcare informatization industry.
With a technical background, Liu Xiaoguang is fond of exploration and unafraid to venture into the unknown; innovation seems to be an intrinsic part of his character.
With over a decade of experience in the healthcare IT industry and a strong base of high-quality clients established across Central and East China, Liu Xiaoguang founded Wuhan Ruikang Yongchuang Technology Development Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Ruikang Yongchuang”) with great ambition. The company is committed to becoming a provider of consulting, implementation, and operation and maintenance services that align with next-generation smart healthcare software standards both domestically and internationally.
In 2015, Jiangxi Provincial Children's Hospital planned to collaborate with Ruikang Yongchuang to jointly build a hospital integration platform. After conducting in-depth research on integration engine brands available in the market, the hospital targeted ORION Rhapsody.
Upon learning that ORION would hold a two-day product promotion event in Hangzhou, Liu Xiaoguang took a bold, solo initiative and cornered ORION’s senior executives in the conference room to present the project from Jiangxi Provincial Children’s Hospital.
On one side stood a multinational corporation; on the other, a startup that had been in existence for merely a month. He had no confidence whatsoever about whether they would succeed. As expected, today’s discussion ended inconclusively. Ruikang Yongchuang, having been established only recently, lacked a solid foundation. Relying solely on momentum to gain recognition was clearly insufficient. Unless, they could just hold on for one more day.
The next day, the same scene played out again, but the atmosphere had become more relaxed.
Liu Xiaoguang affirmed from a technical perspective that the ORION engine architecture demonstrates strong openness. Upon entering the Chinese market, ORION Rhapsody quickly established partnerships with numerous established healthcare IT companies, securing a significant foothold in the healthcare information integration platform market. Its customer base is primarily concentrated in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang-Shanghai region and first-tier cities.
At that time, ORION was also seeking distributors to penetrate the Central China market. Liu Xiaoguang, well aware of this opportunity, proposed leveraging Jiangxi Provincial Children’s Hospital as a strategic entry point and driving the partnership through project development.
“For small companies, it is a rare opportunity to serve as an agent for international products, and maintaining integrity is of paramount importance,” said Liu Xiaoguang. The conversation lasted for a considerable time. By the time he left the conference room, a strategic partnership with ORION Rhapsody had been established. In the following years, Ruikang Yongchuang successfully promoted medical integration platform projects in Jiangxi, Hubei, Jiangsu, Tianjin, Jilin, Xinjiang, and other regions. Ruikang Yongchuang has since become one of Rhapsody’s key partners in China.
Huangshi Central Hospital is a typical case of Ruikang Yongchuang.
Huangshi Central Hospital, affiliated with the Edong Medical Group, is a public comprehensive Grade 3A hospital integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research, training, and prevention.
Liu Xiaoguang candidly stated that Huangshi Central Hospital has a very clear vision for its informatization development: relying on domestic and international medical quality standard systems, focusing on the intelligent transformation of hospital information systems, and aiming to enhance the quality and safety of medical management.
The goal of hospital information and intelligence transformation is to conduct refined optimization of existing systems without the need for complete overhaul, enabling seamless integration with various new specialized systems. This approach reduces construction costs for hospitals while avoiding the risks associated with replacing core business systems.
By referencing domestic and international standards for electronic medical record (EMR) grading and interoperability, and through site visits to advanced hospitals in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen, and other cities, Huangshi Central Hospital and Ruikang Yongchuang have established a pathway for intelligent transformation. This approach centers on integrated clinical care by physicians and nurses, with EMRs at its core, and fully integrates various business systems.
Ruikang Yongchuang has thereby developed a new-generation intelligent hospital system holistic solution tailored for large and medium-sized hospitals, covering the hospital’s core management functions and all key stages of patients’ in-hospital medical visits. “Its advanced technical architecture, customized tools, and mature business objects enable rapid, low-cost, and in-depth product expansion and value-added services, allowing providers to tailor products that best meet users’ actual application needs.”
In recent years, clinical systems centered on electronic medical records (EMR) have become a key focus of construction for tertiary hospitals in China. Ruikang Yongchuang has also joined this trend.
On January 18, 2018, as the most important software service provider for Huangshi Central Hospital of Edong Medical Group, Ruikang Yongchuang helped the hospital successfully pass the HIMSS Stage 7 evaluation, and subsequently passed multiple ratings such as Level 4 Class A for Interconnectivity and Level 6 for National Electronic Medical Records.
After four years of exploration and development, Ruikang Yongchuang has established a comprehensive product portfolio, including a next-generation Hospital Information System (HIS), hospital integration platform, Business Intelligence (BI) system for intelligent decision-making, and an intelligent prescription review platform. The company has obtained more than 50 software copyrights and two utility model patents.
Since 2018, Ruikang Yongchuang has pioneered the replication of its intelligent transformation model at Jiangxi Provincial Children's Hospital. The overall construction is guided by the requirements for Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system grading and interconnectivity standards, with the aim of building a new smart campus for the children's hospital. Currently, this initiative is being vigorously advanced. Furthermore, the prescription review platform, developed based on the Pediatric Alliance, won the First Prize in the 2019 China Smart Healthcare Innovation Competition.
Through numerous success stories and clear advantages in meeting the national electronic medical record (EMR) grading standards, Ruikang Yongchuang’s intelligent transformation model has gradually gained widespread recognition among hospitals across various regions, including Jiangsu, Tianjin, and Guangdong.
After only a few years of entrepreneurship, Liu Xiaogang has felt a profound shift in his mindset. “I’ve become more mature,” he says. In the early days of the venture, the core team consisted of just seven technical staff members, who were so busy they lost track of everything else; Liu Xiaogang was also accustomed to being on the front lines of technology development. Today, however, the Ruikang Yongchuang team has expanded to over 100 employees, and Liu Xiaogang now primarily serves as a strategic coordinator overseeing operations from behind the scenes.
He stated that 2020 would mark a turning point for both himself and Ruikang Yongchuang. “I will gradually shift my focus to corporate operations management, continuously learn and refine my skills, and prepare for the company’s capital对接 in the coming year.” Moving forward, Ruikang Yongchuang plans to expand its team size and is considering launching a financing round.
From its initial technical team to the current Ruikang Yongchuang, with a complete internal corporate structure, Liu Xiaoguang describes it as “small but beautiful.” This is reflected not only in the company’s scale but also in its client base. Ruikang Yongchuang serves more than 30 clients across China, most of which are large-scale public tertiary hospitals.
It has been revealed that, in terms of its business model, Ruikang Yongchuang, in addition to its core business of hospital informatization construction, is leveraging its high-quality customer base to build internet hospital platforms based on medical alliances and medical consortia. The company is shifting from a pure hospital construction model to creating new business growth drivers through the operation of internet hospitals. Innovative projects such as the Jiangxi Provincial Children’s Specialist Medical Alliance and the Xiushui Medical Consortium Patient Service Platform are currently underway. Furthermore, Ruikang Yongchuang has established a close strategic partnership with Weimai, a well-known domestic internet hospital vendor.
Originating from the “red cradle of revolution” in Central China, the spirits of firm perseverance, seeking truth from facts, and hard struggle have become ingrained in the DNA of Ruikang Yongchuang. Liu Xiaoguang believes that, guided by the new era, as long as the company upholds the Jinggangshan Spirit, establishes a firm foothold in Central China, and remains committed to its development goal of serving the entire nation, Ruikang Yongchuang will have the opportunity to become a core force driving the informatization of healthcare, thereby delivering superior services to its clients.Institutions interested in the company, please contact the financing assistant Xiaoyun: DongMai_Investent
