GSK's $3.5B Inhalation Powder Trelegy Ellipta Gains New Asthma Indication in China

On January 23, GSK announced that the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA)Approved Trelegy®(Fluticasone Furoate/Umeclidinium/Vilanterol Inhalation Powder, FF/UMEC/VI) New Indication Added for Maintenance Treatment in Adult Asthma Patients.
The approval of this new indication is for the productThe expansion of the original chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) indication also makes fluticasone furoate/vilanterol inhalation powder becomeChina's first and only single-inhaler triple therapy (SITT) for the maintenance treatment of both asthma and COPD.
This approval is mainly based on GSK's CAPTAIN Clinical research. The study shows that for inhaled corticosteroids/long-acting β2 Patients with poorly controlled receptor agonists (ICS/LABA) compared to dual therapy FF/VI, usingFF/UMEC/VI provided significant additional bronchodilation, improving lung function.
Fluticasone Furoate/Umeclidinium/Vilanterol Inhalation Powder is a once-daily, single-inhalation triple therapy administered through a single inhaler device. It contains three components: the inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) fluticasone furoate (FF), the long-acting anticholinergic agent (LAMA) umeclidinium (UMEC), and the long-acting β2 Receptor agonist (LABA) Vilanterol Trifenatate (VI), via GSK's proprietary Ellipta® Administration via dry powder inhaler.
Flutiform (fluticasone furoate and vilanterol inhalation powder) has been launched in multiple countries and regions, including China, the U.S., Europe, and Japan. The specifications approved in China include: 100/62.5/25 μg (for asthma and COPD indications), and 200/62.5/25 μg (for asthma indication).
Since its launch, the product's sales have skyrocketed, reaching $3.452 billion in 2024 and $2.942 billion in the first three quarters of 2025.
In China, GSK was launched in 2019. The market size has been increasing year by year, with steady growth, and the current sales have reached over five billion.
