Infection prevention and control through disinfection and sterilization are critically important. Understanding bacteria and viruses serves as the best vaccine, while disinfection and sterilization act as the most effective protective shield.
Zhao Gang, who has spent years developing respiratory health products, understands that viruses pose a threat to human survival and that the respiratory tract is the primary entry point for viral invasion into the human body.
Shanghai Pucui Intelligent Technology, founded by Zhao Gang, has been dedicated to the research, development, and production of products related to human respiratory health, such as intelligent negative-pressure plasma constant-oxygen fresh air integrated units and intelligent air sterilizing humidifiers. In February 2018, the company introduced Japan-made fourth-generation ultra-pure controlled-release low-temperature plasma (ionic superoxide) sterilization and disinfection technology, and signed an authorized development agreement with Onet Co., Ltd. of Japan.
Low-temperature plasma (super-oxygen) sterilization technology can effectively remove formaldehyde from indoor environments. Under the condition of maintaining an ozone concentration of 0.005 mg/L in the test chamber, this controlled-release ozone device achieved a formaldehyde removal rate of 32.3% and a toluene removal rate of 28.4% in the air after 60 minutes of exposure. The average removal rate for artificially contaminated Staphylococcus albus in the air was 99.48%, and the average removal rate for Escherichia coli in the air was 99.68%. The series of disinfection and sterilization products developed by Pucui Intelligence utilizes precision controlled-release technology to enable low-temperature plasma generators to emit pure superoxide. Distinct from traditional gaseous ozone, these devices dynamically release a precise and continuous concentration of superoxide without blind spots, tailored to the requirements of the applicable spatial environment (with the release volume determined by the four-level switch settings on the machine). While decomposing and eliminating airborne viruses, bacteria, and other contaminants in indoor air, the system ensures complete human-machine coexistence, allowing individuals to safely work and rest in the same space.
Zhao Gang explained, “Generally, the purity of ozone is very low, as ozone generation technology remains at the level of the ‘corona discharge’ process, which is technologically backward. This method employs an open-system ozone release mode that readily produces high-voltage electrical sparks, thereby generating harmful nitrogen oxides—a significant health hazard and, strictly speaking, a carcinogen. The essential difference between our controlled-release ultra-pure low-temperature plasma (ionic superoxide) and conventional ozone lies in purity: ionic superoxide achieves a purity level exceeding 99.3%. Furthermore, it utilizes the world’s most advanced manufacturing technology—fully enclosed transistors—for oxygen release, which is fundamentally different from the corona discharge method. This approach eliminates the production of nitrogen oxides and secondary pollution, representing a critical hard indicator distinguishing technological superiority.”
Zhao Gang added, “Our core technology products control airborne bacteria and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor air, achieving absolute eradication of the survival and transmission of airborne bacteria and viruses.”
In essence, PuCui Intelligence’s ionic superoxide products function similarly to traditional ozone sterilization. Ozone possesses strong oxidative properties, enabling it to decompose harmful substances such as formaldehyde and toluene. Ionic superoxide offers broad-spectrum eradication of airborne bacteria and viruses, providing comprehensive, no-blind-spot indoor disinfection that is 3,000 times faster than UV disinfection and 300–600 times faster than bleaching powder disinfection. It can eliminate planktonic bacteria in air and water within a short period, neutralize and decompose various toxic substances, remove all malodors, and bleach and clarify polluted impurities in water. Ozone can be utilized to eliminate unpleasant odors, foul smells, musty odors, and other similar scents.
Zhao Gang, Chairman of Shanghai PuCui Intelligent Technology, stated: “Traditional ozone disinfection technology has significant technical limitations. The use of impure or uncontrolled-release ozone poses severe health risks to humans; therefore, current ozone disinfection products on the market cannot be operated in environments where people are present.”
A critical design and manufacturing process indicator for the “ionic superoxide” disinfection technology is the purity of the generated disinfecting and cleaning agents. This represents a major bottleneck in the industrial commercialization of other domestically marketed so-called “low-temperature plasma” technologies for air purification, where traditional ozone purity often fails to reach even 70%. In contrast, ionic superoxide achieves a purity of 99.3%, with its concentration precisely controlled within the range of 0.01–0.08 ppm—mimicking the natural environments of seaside and forest areas. It is currently recognized internationally as the latest green, environmentally friendly technology for purification and disinfection.
As early as 2010, products utilizing controlled-release ionic superoxide technology were already widely used in Japan, including on Shinkansen bullet trains, in households, and in hospitals. In China, ultra-pure fourth-generation controlled-release superoxide devices have been progressively installed in rail transit systems (high-speed rail and subways), and the technology has been integrated into mid- to high-end passenger vehicles. Shanghai Changzheng Hospital has employed the fourth-generation controlled-release superoxide technology for academic research, and the ventilation and circulation systems of Disney hotels worldwide have also adopted this technology.
In terms of usage scenarios, Zhao Gang stated, “It can be said that wherever there are people, there is a need to guard against viral and bacterial infections.”
Superoxygen controlled-release technology can be widely used in hotel rooms, food processing plants, restaurants, vehicle compartments, and households. In hospitals, it can effectively decompose and eliminate odors from indoor air. Superoxygen technology can also be installed in hospital wards, school classrooms, apartments, office buildings, nursing homes, kindergartens, high-speed trains, airport waiting areas, passenger ship cabins, and other settings.
The key to ensuring the concentration and stability of ozone release lies in the controlled-release technology of low-temperature plasma superoxide.
Low-temperature plasma is the fourth state of matter—following solid, liquid, and gas—known as the ionized state. When an applied voltage reaches the discharge voltage of a gas, the gas undergoes electrical breakdown, generating a mixture that includes electrons, various ions, atoms, and free radicals. Although the electron temperature is high during the discharge process, the temperature of heavy particles remains low, resulting in an overall low-temperature system; hence, it is termed low-temperature plasma. Low-temperature plasma technology is an electrochemical process driven by the combined effects of electronic, chemical, catalytic, and coupling mechanisms, representing a novel technological approach.
Zhao Gang stated, “Plasma contains a large number of high-energy electrons, positive and negative ions, excited-state particles, and reactive free radicals with strong oxidizing properties, such as post-discharge hydroxyl radicals (OH), hydroperoxyl radicals (HO2), and ozone (O3), which enhance the characteristics of superoxide by nearly tenfold.”
The “superoxygen” disinfection technology generated by low-temperature plasma technology is fundamentally different from other traditional “corona discharge” ozone generation technologies. It utilizes superoxygen as a medium to release oxygen atoms more rapidly, thereby significantly enhancing the reactivity of superoxygen.
It is reported that Pucui Intelligent’s low-temperature plasma technology was licensed from Japan’s Onet Co., Ltd. With three decades of specialization in disinfection and sterilization technologies, Onet has advanced its superoxide technology to the fourth generation, which is currently recognized globally as an industry-leading, environmentally friendly green disinfection and sterilization solution.
Finally, Zhao Gang also stated, “During this special period, we at Pucui pay tribute to all medical workers fighting on the front lines in Wuhan, as well as to all anti-epidemic medical personnel across China. During the 2003 SARS coronavirus outbreak, National Biosafety Level 3 (P3) laboratories demonstrated that ozone could effectively inactivate the SARS virus. Today, amid the current epidemic, superoxide further demonstrates its unique value. We hope to leverage this technology to benefit the public.”
