Professor Ferid Murad primarily engages in research on cell signaling, with a focus on the NO/cGMP signaling pathway, identifying novel molecular pathways and targets to facilitate the discovery and development of new therapeutic approaches. In 1977, Professor Murad published a paper demonstrating that nitroglycerin and certain related cardiac medications induce the formation of nitric oxide, a colorless and odorless gas that causes vasodilation by increasing the diameter of blood vessels. This discovery spurred the invention of sildenafil and potentially identified methods for treating conditions such as myocardial infarction and stroke, exerting a profound impact on medicine and pharmaceuticals and driving the research and development of various drug classes, including cardiovascular agents, joint-related medications, neurological drugs, and anticancer therapeutics.
