Academician Han Jisheng


Since 1965, he has systematically investigated the mechanisms of acupuncture analgesia from the perspective of central neurochemistry, discovering that acupuncture can mobilize the body’s endogenous analgesic systems. He was the first in the world to propose the frequency-dependent effects of neuromodulation. He developed the “Han’s Acupoint Nerve Stimulator (HANS),” which has demonstrated significant therapeutic efficacy for a variety of diseases. He received the National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 research grant for 13 consecutive years and concurrently served as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard University. He has published more than 500 papers in domestic and international journals and monographs, and served as editor-in-chief for nine Chinese-language monographs. He has been honored with more than 20 ministerial-level awards and titles, including the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award, the First Prize of the State Education Commission, the First Prize of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, and the Class A Award of the Ministry of Health. His prestigious accolades include the Wu Jieping Medical Prize (the highest honor in the medical field), the Peking University Cai Yuanpei Award, the Li Fu Award, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, and the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Acupuncture Research in the United States.


Published over 500 papers in international journals and monographs, and served as editor-in-chief for nine Chinese-language monographs. Since 1979, has been invited to deliver 209 lectures at more than 100 universities and research institutions across 27 countries and regions. Previously served as a Scientific Advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO) and as a Consultant to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). Elected as an International Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences in Lund, Sweden, in 1987. Founded the Beijing Neuroscience Society, the Chinese Association for the Study of Pain, and the Chinese Chapter of the International Neuropeptide Society.


Academician Han Jisheng devoted half his life to achieving a scientific breakthrough in the principles of acupuncture, elucidating the mechanisms of acupuncture analgesia and establishing the neurochemical theory of acupuncture therapy. In collaboration with Professor Liu Yiming from Beihang University, he successfully developed the Low-Frequency Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulator, commonly known as the “Han’s Instrument.” This device has undergone research pilots in North America, Europe, and countries along the “Belt and Road” Initiative, garnering high acceptance among physicians and patients and receiving strong market feedback. These achievements have significantly accelerated the commercialization of the “Han’s Instrument Project.”
