In 2020, the formidable COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe. In this battle against the epidemic, from laboratories to the front lines of outbreak response, we witnessed the “China speed” in translating scientific achievements into practical applications across pathogen detection, disease surveillance and early warning, rapid screening, clinical diagnosis and treatment, and the development of new drugs and vaccines.
To further promote the translation and commercialization of scientific and technological achievements in hygiene and health, as well as to foster the development of innovation and entrepreneurship projects in the healthcare industry, the Hangzhou Qiantang New Area Administrative Committee, the Talent Office of the Hangzhou Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Hangzhou Investment Promotion Bureau, and The First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine jointly hosted the “Global Call for Healthcare Innovation and Entrepreneurship Projects” in March 2020.
Spanning three months, the initiative cast a wide net across the global healthcare sector, inviting submissions from fields such as biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, big data, and artificial intelligence. A total of 94 projects passed the initial screening; among these, 45 underwent further review by shortlisting committees and expert panels, ultimately earning the Crested Ibis Award after rigorous multi-stage selection.
