From December 2019 to July 2020, after more than half a year of anti-epidemic efforts, the risk of COVID-19 transmission still objectively exists. How effective have technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data been in the early warning, tracking, and prevention and control of infectious diseases? What implications do they hold for the protracted domestic and international fight against the epidemic in the future? How can AI respond to global public health emergencies?
On July 10–11, 2020, the 2020 World Artificial Intelligence Health Cloud Summit was held online. A special session titled “Peak Dialogue Between the Two Heroes of the Epidemic Fight” featured a discussion between Wu Fan, Vice Dean of Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University, known as the “Heroine of Disease Control,” and Professor Zhang Wenhong from Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, renowned as the “Hardcore Doctor.” They engaged in a dynamic exchange of views on the topic “How AI Can Respond to Global Public Health Emergencies,” sharing their insightful perspectives.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, its unprecedented speed of transmission and extensive scope have posed significant challenges to China’s emergency response mechanisms for public health incidents and its epidemic prevention and control efforts. As a critical enabling technology, artificial intelligence has played a pivotal role in various anti-epidemic scenarios. It has become a global consensus to fully support the fight against the pandemic and improve human health.
To further implement the requirements of the State Council’s Development Plan for New Generation Artificial Intelligence, Opinions on Promoting the Development of “Internet + Healthcare”, and the Outline of the Healthy China 2030 Plan, promote the development of medical artificial intelligence and international exchanges and cooperation, explore the use of AI to address inadequate and unbalanced development in the global healthcare industry, drive innovative development of the AI healthcare sector, and accelerate the transformation and industrialization of AI medical technological achievements, the 2020 World Artificial Intelligence Health Cloud Summit is proposed to be held.
As one of the thematic forums of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) Cloud Summit, the Health Cloud Summit, themed “Intelligently Connecting the World, Sharing Health,” was held under the guidance of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
