Zhang Yuanting,Academician of the International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering, IEEE Fellow, Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering
Professor Zhang Yuanting is currently the Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong and the Director of the Hong Kong Center for Cardiovascular Health Engineering. He previously served as the Founding Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, a Sensor Systems Designer in the Health Technologies Division at Apple Inc. in the United States, and the Founding Director of the Key Laboratory of Health Informatics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Reviews in Biomedical Engineering and is a member of the Liu Mingwei Regenerative Medicine Research Center (LRG) at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. From 2014 onwards, he was consecutively selected for six years as one of Elsevier’s Most Cited Chinese Researchers in the field of Biomedical Engineering. In 2006 and 2007, he was elected as a Fellow of the International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering, an IEEE Fellow, and an AIMBE Fellow, respectively.
Academician Zhang Yuanting Proposes the Theory of Health Engineering, integrating scientific engineering and technology with biomedicine, sociology, law, and management, focusing on the prediction and prevention of major diseases to drive the development of the emerging broad health industry and facilitate the transition from current passive medical care to future proactive health.
Academician Zhang believes that for wearable devices to play a more effective role in the next stage, they must be integrated with smart healthcare. By leveraging sensing and information technologies, these devices can establish connectivity between patients and hospitals, enabling disease prevention and prediction, thereby realizing the concept of smart health.. Before embarking on smart healthcare initiatives, it is essential to understand societal needs, focusing not only on subsequent treatment but also on upfront preventive measures.
Academician Zhang Yuanting pointed out the development trend of wearable products—“SUPER-MINDS: A Five-Aspect, Five-Property System”:Miniaturization, intelligence, networking, digitalization, and standardization, as well as confidentiality, non-invasiveness, precision, energy efficiency, and robustness.
In recent years, as a strategically emerging industry under key national support, the medical device sector has enjoyed robust momentum, bolstered by a suite of policies ranging from deepened review and approval reforms, innovation in high-value consumables, Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRG), and Supply, Processing, and Distribution (SPD) models, to medical consortia, tiered diagnosis and treatment, and the Marketing Authorization Holder (MAH) system for medical devices. Statistics show that China’s medical device market reached RMB 628.5 billion in 2019, and is projected to exceed RMB 900 billion by 2022.

In recent years, domestic medical device innovation has risen rapidly. The primary market has seen the emergence of unicorn companies such as United Imaging Healthcare, Venus Medtech, and MicroPort CardioFlow. In the secondary market, Mindray Medical’s market capitalization has exceeded RMB 300 billion, while Chunli Medical’s stock price has surged more than tenfold over two years. By segment, China’s in vitro diagnostics (IVD) market reached RMB 60.4 billion in 2018, representing an 18.4% year-on-year increase. It is projected to maintain an annual growth rate of approximately 18%, making China one of the fastest-growing IVD markets globally.
All these signs seem to indicate that the golden age of domestically produced medical devices has arrived. What trends will shape the future development of China’s medical device industry? Which specific segments within the domestic medical device sector hold greater promise for growth? At this summit, the morning roundtable discussion will focus onPost-Pandemic Era Medical DevicesDevelopment opportunities; the afternoon roundtable session will delve into specialized subfields, andVeteran Investors in the IVD Industry: Precision Dialogues with High-Quality Innovative Enterprises。
