Zhao Xiangwei,Deputy Dean, School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering, Southeast University

Zhao Xiangwei is a Professor at the State Key Laboratory of Bioelectronics, Southeast University, and serves as the Secretary-General of the Biomedical Electronics Branch of the Chinese Institute of Electronics. His current research primarily focuses on biomedical detection and sensing, with specific interests in single-cell atlas, digital PCR, and point-of-care testing (POCT). He has published more than 60 SCI-indexed papers, which have been cited over 1,500 times. He has presided over or completed more than 10 projects, including those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National High-Tech Research and Development Program (863 Program), and the Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Support Program. He was awarded the First Prize for Natural Sciences by the Ministry of Education in 2010 and the Special Gold Medal at the Geneva International Invention Exhibition in 2014. He holds more than 20 authorized patents and software copyrights, eight of which have been transferred. He has been selected for the Ministry of Education’s New Century Excellent Talents program, named an Academic Leader for Young and Middle-aged Scholars under the Jiangsu Province Qinglan Project, recognized as a high-level talent in Jiangsu Province’s “Six Major Talent Peaks” program, and appointed as a “Huaying Scholar” at Southeast University.

Last year, Professor Zhao Xiangwei’s research group achieved rapid and highly sensitive detection of DNA from 11 respiratory tract infection (RTI) pathogens on a single test strip by combining surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-encoded nanotags with DNA microarrays. The related findings were published online in the journal Theranostics on June 7, 2019. This study represents a further extension of the group’s previous work and was supported by projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Key Research and Development Program. This high-throughput test strip provides new insights for point-of-care testing (POCT) and holds broad application prospects in fields such as disease diagnosis, inspection and quarantine, and environmental monitoring.

At the summit, Professor Zhao Xiangwei will join the morning’s roundtable discussion as a panelist, alongside Wang Jinhe, Vice President of External Affairs and Market Access at Johnson & Johnson (China); the Founding Managing Partner of DaoTong Capital; and Yang Song, Chief Analyst for the Pharmaceutical Sector at Cinda Securities. Together, they will provide insights into the medical device industry in the post-pandemic era.

Forum Introduction

In recent years, as a strategic emerging industry under key national support, the medical device sector has enjoyed robust momentum, bolstered by a suite of policies ranging from deepened review and approval reforms, innovation in high-value consumables, DRG (Diagnosis-Related Groups), and SPD (Supply, Processing, and Distribution) models, to medical consortia, tiered diagnosis and treatment systems, and the Marketing Authorization Holder (MAH) system for medical devices. Statistics show that China’s medical device market reached RMB 628.5 billion in 2019, and is projected to exceed RMB 900 billion by 2022.

In-Depth Content: Two Roundtables Focus on Industry Trends and the Development Direction of In Vitro Diagnostics

In recent years, domestic medical device innovation has surged. The primary market has seen the emergence of unicorn companies such as United Imaging Healthcare, Venus Medtech, and MicroPort CardioFlow. In the secondary market, Mindray Medical’s market capitalization has exceeded RMB 300 billion, while Chunli Medical’s stock price has increased more than tenfold over two years. By segment, China’s in vitro diagnostics (IVD) market reached RMB 60.4 billion in 2018, representing an 18.4% year-on-year growth. It is projected to maintain an annual growth rate of approximately 18%, making China one of the fastest-growing IVD markets globally.

All these signs seem to indicate that the golden age of domestically produced medical devices has arrived. What trends will shape the future development of China's medical device industry? Which specific segments within the domestic medical device sector hold greater promise for growth? At this summit, the morning roundtable discussion will focus onPost-Pandemic Era Medical DevicesDevelopment Opportunities: The afternoon roundtable session will delve into specialized sub-sectors,andVeteran Investors in the IVD Industry: Precision Dialogue with High-Quality Innovative Enterprises
