Recently, VCBeat learned that Dong Quan, former Executive Deputy General Manager of the Distribution Company and General Manager of the Brand Marketing Center at Yabao Pharmaceutical Group, has joined Unnamed Penguin as a partner. With the mission of “Connecting Health,” Unnamed Penguin has been deeply engaged in the life and health sector for five years, committed to helping clients achieve data-driven business growth through big data products and solutions in the life and health field.

“It is a great honor to take on this significant responsibility. The Unnamed Penguin team is vibrant and professional, with profound expertise in the internet and big data sectors, demonstrating strong resilience and adaptability throughout its entrepreneurial journey, while its business is expanding rapidly,” said Mr. Dong Quan. Upon joining the company, he will primarily oversee corporate strategy and business development. Leveraging his experience, insights, and network in the pharmaceutical industry, he will aggressively pursue new markets and continuously expand the company’s business boundaries, thereby deepening integration with partners and enhancing understanding of the complex demands within the industry.

Mr. Dong Quan has over 24 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, with a deep understanding of the operational models of various types of pharmaceutical enterprises, including foreign-invested, state-owned, and private companies. He possesses extensive management expertise and a broad professional network. Notably, in the first half of 2005, Sino-American SmithKline (SAS) faced an unprecedented sales crisis, as its commercial distribution channels nearly collapsed under the pressure of years of channel stuffing. Market prices for Contac and Fenbid were inverted, commercial clients’ inventory levels exceeded four months, cross-regional gray market sales were rampant, distributor confidence plummeted to rock bottom, and sales performance was extremely poor. At that time, both the General Manager and the Sales Director of SAS resigned successively, and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) China even established a crisis response team. Faced with this predicament, Mr. Dong was appointed in July of the same year to oversee national commercial operations. He led his team in implementing a series of market regulation measures, helping the company navigate through the crisis and establishing an effective distributor management system.

In 2011, Mr. Dong Quan was appointed General Manager of the Marketing Company of Harbin Pharmaceutical Group Sixth Pharmaceutical Factory. In 2013, he was fully involved in the integration of the OTC sales teams of Harbin Pharmaceutical Group Sixth Pharmaceutical Factory, Harbin Pharmaceutical Group Sanjing, and Shiyitang, leading to the establishment of Harbin Pharmaceutical Group Marketing Company, where he served as Executive Deputy General Manager. During this period, he piloted a national general distributorship model for key products, achieving nearly RMB 1 billion in sales for Calcium Gluconate through collaboration with Jointown Pharmaceutical Group, and nearly RMB 700 million in sales for Zinc Gluconate through partnership with China Resources Group. In 2015, Mr. Dong Quan assumed the roles of Executive Deputy General Manager of Xiuzheng Group Marketing Company and General Manager of Xiuzheng Tang Chain Pharmacy Co., Ltd. He established a cross-divisional national Key Account (KA) team, integrating flagship products from various business units for distribution to the top 100 pharmacy chains nationwide, with Yixintang Chain Pharmacy alone exceeding RMB 80 million in annual sales. These commercial and KA management experiences were effectively applied when he later served as Vice President of Marketing at Yabao Pharmaceutical Group.

During his tenure as Executive Vice President at Yabao Pharmaceutical, Mr. Dong Quan began to contemplate the company’s digital transformation and was introduced to Unnamed Penguin and its Terminal Connect data analytics system. For Yabao, the Terminal Connect system effectively addressed many challenges in marketing operations, providing valuable guidance on market capacity, market potential, current sales performance, and strategic direction. Sales data is crucial for OTC (over-the-counter) sales; however, how to effectively integrate authentic data to generate insights and intelligence that add value to the enterprise has long been a key focus and pain point for companies. This is particularly true for pharmaceutical brands, where there remains significant room for improvement and market opportunity in leveraging sales data to better guide business operations.

Mr. Dong Quan’s collaboration with Unnamed Penguin inspired him to embrace technology. After years of digital practice and careful assessment of future trends, he has made a deliberate decision to devote himself to this broader field, which is rich in both challenges and opportunities. “Since its establishment in 2015, Unnamed Penguin has been committed to delivering long-term, sustainable value to China’s pharmaceutical industry. Looking ahead, I am confident in the company’s prospects within the sector. We will continue to strengthen collaboration with our partners in the pharmaceutical industry, providing them with more valuable integrated big-data solutions and more in-depth, meticulous services during this critical phase of their transformation toward the industrial internet.”

Zou Xiaoliang, Founder and CEO of Unnamed Penguin, stated that the company is delighted to welcome Mr. Dong Quan to its management team. With extensive frontline management experience in the pharmaceutical industry, Mr. Dong has achieved remarkable success across multinational corporations, state-owned enterprises, and listed private companies, earning him a broad professional network and an excellent reputation within the industry. Unnamed Penguin, with its strong internet DNA, is committed to becoming China’s most trusted digital partner for the pharmaceutical industry. Mr. Dong’s rich practical experience and profound understanding of the pharmaceutical sector will enable the company to better align its products and services with the needs of pharmaceutical enterprises, thereby strengthening collaborations with partners, unlocking new growth opportunities, and further accelerating the company’s development.
