On July 29, 2020, VCBeat (WeChat Official Account: vcbeat) learned that Mayo Clinic had once again topped the annual “Best Hospitals” rankings by U.S. News & World Report, being named the best hospital in the United States.
This marks the fifth consecutive year that Mayo Clinic has ranked No. 1 nationwide; it also secured the top spot in all three states where it operates: Arizona, Florida, and Minnesota. In terms of the number of medical specialties ranked No. 1, Mayo Clinic far surpasses other medical centers in the United States.
Additionally, Mayo Clinic in Arizona ranked 16th on the “Best Hospitals Honor Roll” of the top 20 hospitals nationwide.
“Being ranked the No. 1 hospital in the nation for five consecutive years is a testament to the exceptional performance of our staff, who consistently prioritize patient needs, even during the pandemic,” said Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., President and CEO of Mayo Clinic. “Delivering highly compassionate, personalized, high-quality medical care to our patients is at the core of our daily work. We are honored to have a team that collaborates effectively to creatively address complex medical challenges and develop new therapies through innovative research.”
U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” rankings honor the 20 U.S. hospitals with the highest overall scores across 16 medical and surgical specialties, as well as for 10 common procedures and conditions. The evaluation metrics include survival rates, experience, nursing staff, patient services, and reputation among other specialists.
This year, Mayo Clinic ranks first in the following six specialties, surpassing all other healthcare providers:
· Diabetes and Endocrinology
· Gastroenterology (GI) and Gastrointestinal Surgery
· Gynecology
· Nephrology
· Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery
· Urology
Dr. Farrugia stated, “We are grateful for this recognition, as such rankings provide a reference for patients and their families when deciding which healthcare institution to choose. We hope that patients will select Mayo Clinic to address their complex or critical conditions.”
From a single practicing physician in 1864 to the present day, Mayo Clinic has become a global synonym for “hope and healing.” With more than 70,000 employees, Mayo Clinic provides specialized, highly compassionate medical care to over 1.2 million patients each year from all U.S. states and nearly 140 countries and regions.
“Ranking first nationwide, as well as in Arizona, Florida, and Minnesota, is the best testament to our employees’ dedication to providing every patient with the highest-quality and safest medical care,” said Henry Ting, M.D., Chief Value Officer at Mayo Clinic. “As COVID-19 has become the new normal, we will continue to uphold our commitment to quality, safety, and patient experience. These honors belong to our staff. We are proud that our excellence in patient care has been recognized, which has been key to Mayo Clinic’s ability to stand out among numerous healthcare institutions over its 150-year history.”
