“When acting as an investor, one primarily plays the role of overseeing the big picture, whereas entrepreneurs must be involved in every detail of the company’s operations,” said Wu Ximing, founder of Maodu Cloud Technology. In his transition from investor to entrepreneur, he has shifted from being a guide to becoming an implementer.

One day in 2013, a long-time friend working in internet technology visited Wu Ximing with a prototype of an infant anti-theft system. He straightforwardly expressed his desire to find a distributor to bring this product to market, thereby helping hospitals manage the safety and security of newborns during their hospital stay.

At that time, Wu Ximing, who came from a pharmaceutical marketing background, was contemplating how to expand his business footprint.

Since graduating from university, Wu Ximing has been engaged in pharmaceutical marketing. He previously worked in the sales of obstetrics and gynecology products at Xianju Pharmaceutical, a publicly listed pharmaceutical company, and boasts over 20 years of marketing experience in the healthcare industry. After 2003, Wu Ximing ventured into investment, successively establishing Nanjing Jinling Andrology Hospital, Nanjing Sukang Pharmaceutical, and Nanjing Aibida Biotechnology, all of which yielded substantial returns.

2013 was a favorable year for the Internet of Things (IoT) industry. Five ministries and commissions jointly formulated ten special action plans for IoT development, providing a comprehensive strategy covering all aspects from top-level design to industry applications. Amidst favorable policies and the release of various standards in the IoT field, Wu Ximing identified significant market opportunities in the IoT sector.

The two quickly found common ground and, riding the wave of internet entrepreneurship, founded Jiangsu Maodu Cloud Medical Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Maodu Cloud”) in 2014, focusing on the research and development of medical Internet of Things (IoT) and intelligent manufacturing products.

Specializing in the maternal and infant care and psychiatric sectors, from software services to data operations

Currently, Maodu Cloud Technology has assembled an R&D team comprising 35 masters and doctoral degree holders, established R&D centers in Nanjing and Shenzhen respectively, and entered into long-term strategic cooperation agreements with prestigious universities such as Southern University of Science and Technology and Southeast University. Furthermore, Maodu Cloud Technology is actively building its own “moat”: it currently holds more than 30 independent intellectual property rights and has received numerous honors and qualifications, including recognition as a National High-Tech Enterprise, an Excellent Demonstration Enterprise for Scientific and Technological Innovation in Jiangsu Province, and a Software Enterprise.

In 2014, the Anyi Infant Anti-Theft System was developed and launched, receiving highly positive feedback during hospital trials. Through collaborations with hospitals, we obtained first-hand clinical data to refine our offerings, ultimately developing products and systems that best meet clinical needs.

Currently, IoT products mainly fall into three categories:

1. A full-band integrated antenna and feeder system capable of simultaneously supporting multiple medical wireless applications.Based on the hospital’s actual needs, either a single-antenna feeder or a dual-antenna feeder system can be deployed, covering frequencies from 400 MHz to 6 GHz. The system supports integration with various IoT base stations and IoT cloud platforms, enabling the collection and processing of diverse IoT service data. It simultaneously accommodates multiple medical wireless applications, thoroughly resolving issues such as unstable hospital signals, severe interference, redundant cabling, and data leakage. This ensures truly zero packet loss and zero roaming for hospital wireless applications, prevents redundant infrastructure deployment, reduces construction costs, safeguards hospital information security, and achieves “multi-network convergence.”

It is worth mentioning that the Wireless Intrusion Detection System (WIDS) detection APs in the full-band integrated antenna and feeder system regularly probe wireless signals to monitor device status within the wireless network, implement appropriate countermeasures against unauthorized access devices, and thereby safeguard personal privacy and data security.

In addition to deploying medical-grade wireless networks for hospitals, Maodu Cloud Tech also provides various IoT applications based on a full-band integrated antenna and feeder system, such as infant anti-theft systems, patient elopement prevention systems, smart infusion systems, mobile nursing systems, medical waste management systems, hospital energy efficiency management systems, intelligent asset acquisition and location management systems, wireless monitoring systems for medical cold chains, patient temperature monitoring systems, mobile ECG acquisition systems, mobile ECG telemetry systems, and hospital navigation systems.

Second, an integrated smart care and safety management platform for psychiatric hospitals. To address challenges such as the difficulty in identifying psychiatric patients, their propensity to wander off, and management complexities, Maodu Cloud Tech has launched the Smart Care Integrated Safety Management Platform. The platform primarily consists of three modules: the Intelligent Care Management System, the Smart Nursing Management System, and the Intelligent Early Warning Management System.

Intelligent Care Management System:

By equipping patients with smart wristbands, their real-time locations and distribution areas can be accurately pinpointed, enabling real-time roll calls, positive identification, and queries into patient activity levels and movement trajectories over a specified period, thereby facilitating patient management. The system also features anomaly alerting capabilities; should patients exhibit abnormal behaviors—such as leaving designated safe zones, unauthorized entry into restricted areas, prolonged loitering in specific zones, or unusual gathering patterns—an alert will be triggered. Security personnel can then immediately access video feeds from the corresponding locations to verify the situation and take appropriate action.

Intelligent Nursing Management System:

Integrate with mobile nursing systems to record patient identity, medication delivery, and administration details. Enable real-time location tracking of medical staff via ID badges, implement electronic geofencing for classified management of patients with different conditions, and ensure timely response to various emergencies.

Intelligent Early Warning Management System:

By collecting and analyzing data such as patient alarm records, app-based location tracking, mobile activity information, and medication adherence, the system assesses patients' health status, onset timing, and risk levels, providing early warnings.

Third, establish a smart obstetrics and maternal-infant big data platform.“Mama Needs” serves as the foundational platform for Maodu Cloud’s medical IoT system products. From the moment they begin using the system, every mother is required to enter her information via the “Mama Needs” mini-program and mobile app, ensuring that 100% of users are precisely targeted new mothers of newborns. The Maodu Cloud Smart Obstetrics IoT Platform houses vast amounts of maternal and infant big data, with the goal of building it into a “smart maternal and infant platform for precise customer acquisition” and fostering a “new maternal and infant ecosystem.” This approach helps brands across various categories in the maternal and infant industry reduce advertising costs and market investment, thereby enhancing their core competitiveness.

Clear business model, with overseas markets already penetrated

Wu Ximing candidly admitted that the transition from investor to entrepreneur was “not easy,” noting a significant shift in his mindset. “Over the past few years, my focus has been on corporate operations and management, while continuously learning and refining my skill set.” Looking ahead, Maodu Cloud Technology plans to expand its team, actively explore new markets, and is also considering launching a round of financing in the capital markets.

Leveraging Wu Ximing’s existing marketing network, Maodu Cloud Technology has rapidly expanded its market presence. Currently, Maodu Cloud Technology’s medical IoT system has been installed and is in use at nearly 1,000 hospitals across more than 20 provinces, including Hainan, Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Henan, Shandong, Sichuan, Hebei, and Chongqing.

Interestingly, among these nearly 1,000 clients, 70% are maternal and child health hospitals at the provincial, municipal, and county levels. Was this an accidental success or a deliberate strategy? Wu Ximing stated that prior to founding the company, Maodu Yunke was focused on how to ensure steady and sustainable growth. Following in-depth market research, Maodu Yunke decided to prioritize maternal and child health hospitals as its primary market expansion direction, leveraging its product advantages and characteristics. Currently, Maodu Yunke has provided services to nearly 500,000 pregnant women and newborns.

Wu Ximing explained that this is determined by the unique characteristics of Maodu Cloud Technology’s products. The company’s primary service recipients are postpartum women and newborns. As these users are highly concentrated and numerous in maternal and child health hospitals, it is easier to identify issues and upgrade products in a targeted manner. Additionally, user-generated data, after undergoing de-identification processes, can be more readily subjected to high-quality analysis, mining, and utilization.

In 2020, Maodu CloudTech launched its global expansion strategy and has since entered markets such as Singapore and Australia. Wu Ximing stated that, bolstered by favorable policies supporting smart hospitals and the “Internet Plus Healthcare” initiative, Maodu CloudTech will gradually expand its service offerings to include remote management, out-of-hospital chronic disease management, and remote management for patients with mental disorders.
