In recent years, China has witnessed a continuous rise in infertility rates, a sustained decline in birth rates, and an accelerating aging population. To encourage childbirth, the government has fully implemented the two-child policy. As concepts such as eugenics, healthy reproduction, and consumption upgrading become deeply ingrained, assisted reproductive technology (ART) is increasingly becoming part of everyday life. Consequently, international ART institutions are actively targeting the Asian market, with a particular focus on China.
Recently, the medical center in Bangkok, Thailand, opened by Genea, a world-leading integrated assisted reproductive technology group, will officially open on September 14. As the Medical Director of the institution, reproductive specialist Dr. Sasaswimol Preechapornkul will introduce Genea’s world-class clinical procedures and highly precise genetic screening technologies to the Asian region, providing advanced services such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), genetic counseling/diagnosis, and fertility preservation to Asian users, particularly those from China.
As Genea’s strategic partner in China, the digital health platform WeDoctor can leverage its strengths in user base scale and operational capabilities to help Genea expand its service reach and enhance service efficiency. By introducing advanced assisted reproductive technologies to the Chinese market, WeDoctor will connect more Chinese users with high-quality overseas medical services, providing advanced medical resource support to Chinese families facing fertility challenges.
It is reported that WeDoctor has partnered with Genea to launch services in the Bangkok area on its “WeDoctor Assisted Reproduction and Genetics Zone.” Users can access this zone via the WeDoctor App or by searching for “WeDoctor Fertility Experts” on the WeChat Official Account to select relevant services. Meanwhile, Genea will onboard several Chinese-speaking physicians to provide online consultation and follow-up care services to patients in China.
To assist more families facing fertility challenges, WeDoctor launched a public welfare “Ten Million Fertility Subsidy Program” in May this year. Eligible users can consult and apply for the subsidy through its official WeChat account.
Genea is one of the world’s leading fertility groups. Its proprietary technologies, including culture media and embryo transfer catheters, are used in over 600 clinics across more than 60 countries. Headquartered in Sydney with a global presence, Genea offers a diverse range of advanced assisted reproductive technology (ART) services, such as artificial insemination, oocyte and embryo cryopreservation, genetic testing, sperm banking, day surgeries, and pathology. For instance, Geri, an embryo incubator independently developed by Genea, has achieved a 24.3% higher successful pregnancy rate compared to traditional embryo culture systems commonly used in Asia. Leveraging its extensive expertise and technological capabilities, Genea has been engaged by hospitals and clinics in 17 countries—including several major hospitals in China—to conduct assessments and implement improvement initiatives.
Prior to establishing its medical center in Bangkok, Genea had already accumulated extensive operational experience in the city. It is understood that Genea held a stake in Superior ART, a well-known local assisted reproduction center, for thirteen years. Genea’s breakthroughs in advanced fertility technologies have become the gold standard in the global assisted reproductive technology (ART) industry, enabling it to better capitalize on the vast potential of China’s rapidly growing ART market.
According to data released by the Qianzhan Industry Research Institute, China’s infertility rate has risen from 2.5%–3% two decades ago to 12.5%–15%, with the potential size of the assisted reproductive technology market reaching approximately RMB 107.2 billion by 2020.
In response to the substantial domestic demand, WeDoctor, a platform dedicated to providing users with one-stop digital health solutions, has joined forces with renowned assisted reproduction and genetics institutions both in China and abroad to establish the “WeDoctor Reproductive Medicine and Genetics Platform.” This initiative enables resource sharing and functional complementarity, jointly building a comprehensive medical service system covering the entire workflow of reproductive medicine. According to the “Fudan Version of China’s Hospital Rankings” released by the Fudan University Hospital Management Institute in 2019, the WeDoctor Reproductive Medicine and Genetics Platform collaborates with all hospitals ranked among the top 10 in the specialty of reproductive medicine.
