The development of the barrier-free industry requires the promotion from multiple parties, including society, enterprises, and medical institutions.
The barrier-free industry requires the promotion from multiple parties, including society, enterprises, and medical institutions, in order to better serve the elderly and disabled people. In addition to the convenient transformation of social public facilities, it is also necessary to understand the number of certified disabled people, as well as the rehabilitation specialty hospitals and institutions they visit for treatment to improve their physical functions. As the core demand group of the barrier-free industry, the scale of the disabled population and their rehabilitation needs directly establish the market base of the industry. Rehabilitation specialty hospitals and disabled rehabilitation institutions, as important carriers of rehabilitation services, drive product innovation and service upgrades in the medical rehabilitation field through demands for facility construction, equipment provision, and barrier-free modifications of the treatment environment. The scale of rehabilitation discipline beds reflects the supply capacity of rehabilitation services, while demands such as barrier-free bed design and the fitting of assistive devices during rehabilitation training further expand the application depth of the industry in rehabilitation scenarios.
More than 9 million people with disabilities hold certificates
In recent years, China has focused on impoverished disabled individuals and continuously implemented targeted rehabilitation service initiatives for the disabled. According to the "2024 Statistical Bulletin on the Development of Disability Affairs," in 2024, the number of employed certified disabled people in urban and rural areas across China reached 9.144 million, with an increase of 512,000 people. Data shows that disability prevention and rehabilitation services have become more efficient, with the rates of basic medical insurance coverage and family doctor contracts among the disabled exceeding those of the general population. A total of 8.668 million disabled individuals received basic rehabilitation services, 1.553 million received appropriate basic assistive devices, and 499,000 disabled children received rehabilitation assistance.
There are more than 800 rehabilitation specialty hospitals.
As of October 2024, the population aged 60 years and above in China has reached 296 million, accounting for 21.1% of the total population. Addressing the issue of societal aging has become an urgent priority. Based on current growth trends, it is estimated that by 2050, the proportion of elderly people in China will rise to 34.9%, indicating a significant increase in the scale of the patient population affected by age-related diseases.
Since 2008, the number of rehabilitation hospitals in China has been increasing year by year. In 2013, China had a total of 376 rehabilitation hospitals, a year-on-year increase of 16.77%, the largest increase in recent years; in 2022, the number of rehabilitation hospitals in China reached 814, with only four more specialized rehabilitation hospitals added compared to the previous year, a slight year-on-year increase of 0.49%. According to the growth rate of specialized hospitals nationwide disclosed in the "2024 Statistical Bulletin on the Development of China's Health and Wellness Industry," after preliminary calculations, the number of rehabilitation hospitals in China will reach 870 in 2024.
More than 13,000 rehabilitation institutions for people with disabilities
According to the China Disabled Persons' Federation, the number of rehabilitation institutions for persons with disabilities in China increased from 9,775 in 2019 to 13,297 in 2024, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.3%. The expansion of rehabilitation institutions for persons with disabilities is conducive to special groups gradually gaining healthier and more convenient living services.
Number of rehabilitation medicine beds exceeds 370,000
According to statistics from the National Health Commission, the number of beds in rehabilitation medicine departments in China's hospitals has been increasing year by year over the past decade, rising from 72,600 in 2012 to 344,300 in 2022, but the overall growth rate showed a declining trend; due to the pandemic, the number of beds in rehabilitation medicine departments in China's hospitals increased by 5.05% year-on-year in 2022, with a slight recovery in growth rate. Based on changes in the number of medical and health institutions and beds in China in 2024, preliminary estimates indicate that the number of beds in rehabilitation medicine departments in medical institutions in China will reach 375,000 in 2024.
