VCBeat has learned that Maixing Medical recently secured a tens-of-millions-of-yuan RMB investment from Shulan Junjie Capital. The funds from this round of financing will continue to be used for product research and development, market expansion, and other initiatives.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, critical care specialists accounted for more than 30% of the medical personnel dispatched to Hubei Province for support, undertaking the primary responsibility for treating critically ill COVID-19 patients. The outbreak also highlighted insufficient intensive care unit (ICU) infrastructure nationwide and disparities in treatment capabilities across different regions. Currently, the Chinese government has intensified efforts to strengthen critical care departments. In its “Securities Research Report – Big Data in Healthcare Research Report (II)” released on April 9, 2020, Guoxin Securities Economic Research Institute projected that the theoretical number of ICU beds in China would increase substantially compared to current levels, reaching 226,700 by 2023.

In addition to expanding the array of clinical equipment and cultivating more ICU specialists, leveraging big data and artificial intelligence can rapidly empower clinical diagnosis and treatment by enhancing efficiency, reducing errors, lowering costs, alleviating the burden on national health insurance expenditures and patients, and achieving standardization and uniformity in medical care.

Maixing Medical is the first enterprise in China dedicated to big data AI for intensive care units (ICUs). Addressing the limitations of traditional medical system architectures—characterized by highly closed knowledge systems, poor performance in clinical decision support and application adaptability, lack of iteration in clinical knowledge, inability to evolve based on department-specific patient conditions, absence of targeted and personalized case-based solutions, and limited collaborative capabilities—Maixing Medical leverages its strong advantages in integrating, processing, and applying medical big data. By creatively deeply integrating artificial intelligence technologies with clinical application scenarios, the company provides comprehensive intelligent ICU clinical solutions for healthcare professionals, department administrators, and researchers.

Amid the startup boom in medical AI, the high barriers to entry in the ICU market have kept many companies at bay. Meanwhile, after years of overcrowding in the AI sector, capital interest has relatively waned. How has Maixing Medical, established just four years ago, successfully penetrated this niche segment of medical AI and gained investor favor?

VCBeat conducted an exclusive interview with Huang Kezhi, Founder and CEO of Maixing Medical. He stated that Maixing Medical’s acquisition of support from professional healthcare capital was inseparable from its outstanding team and leading-edge products:

First, the technical team at Maixing Medical comprises medical AI scientists, ICU clinicians, algorithm specialists, and healthcare informatics experts. R&D personnel account for 80% of the entire team, with more than half holding master’s or doctoral degrees.

Maixing Medical’s core product, the AI+ICU Clinical Intelligent Decision Support System, is an intelligent platform that integrates three leading AI technologies: natural language processing, knowledge graphs, and machine learning. By providing real-time visualization of personalized dynamic clinical data, AI-based mortality prediction, and disease risk assessment, the system unlocks the value of clinical data and establishes a fully closed-loop intelligent ecosystem, thereby supporting ICU healthcare professionals in their clinical decision-making.

“In the AI+ICU Clinical Intelligent Decision Support System, the ICU Intelligent Quality Control System achieves patient-centric, multi-dimensional data interoperability and automatically calculates various quality control metrics, thereby significantly reducing the workload of clinicians. By standardizing clinical practices through intelligent quality control, the system helps reduce clinical error rates and improve work efficiency. On one hand, it facilitates departmental management for directors; on the other, it ensures that patients receive more timely and standardized diagnosis and treatment,” said Huang Kezhi. Currently, this product has been put into use with remarkable results.

Leveraging its talent pool and product leadership, Maixing Medical has achieved remarkable results in the ICU sector. Huang Kezhi stated that Maixing Medical aims to conduct more in-depth research on ICU Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) and related products in the future, strengthening the ICU Think Tank’s clinical intelligent decision-support capabilities to ensure efficient and accurate assisted diagnosis and treatment in ICUs.

“Currently, Maixing has leveraged its innovative AI capabilities to provide a second wave of intelligent digital empowerment for the ICU departments of many renowned hospitals across China, enhancing clinical decision support and departmental quality control management. Furthermore, we aim to expand our partnerships with more hospitals and enable traditional healthcare IT vendors to adopt our clinical intelligent decision-support system, thereby empowering the healthcare informatics industry,” stated Huang Kezhi.
