On this day next month, November 14, will mark the annual “UN World Diabetes Day,” as the Chinese Diabetes Society launches its large-scale public welfare campaign, “Blue Light Action,” across various regions. Currently, China is home to 116 million individuals with diabetes and 148 million with prediabetes, making it the country with the largest diabetic population worldwide; thus, the situation in combating diabetes is extremely severe. To improve national health standards, strengthen education, prevention, treatment, and monitoring of diabetes, enhance public awareness, and deepen the popularization of scientific knowledge regarding preventive measures and therapeutic approaches, it is imperative to urgently advance and implement nationwide diabetes prevention and control efforts.

Helping patients with diabetes, those with prediabetes, and high-risk individuals to correctly understand diabetes, improve self-management capabilities, and adopt healthy lifestyles forms the foundation of “diabetes prevention and control.” However, these objectives are difficult to achieve solely within the limited time available during outpatient visits and hospital stays. To address this challenge, in preparation for this year’s large-scale public welfare campaign for “United Nations Diabetes Day,” known as “Blue Light Action,” the Chinese Diabetes Society of the Chinese Medical Association organized multidisciplinary experts to jointly record two sets of popular science courses: “Medical Experts Share Science” and “Experts Talk Diabetes.” We hope that everyone can systematically learn about diabetes prevention and control from home, gradually master essential skills for diabetes prevention and management, and actively assume their primary responsibility for health management.

“Medical Experts Deliver Popular Science” features lectures by leading medical authorities, including the Chair and Vice-Chairs of the Chinese Diabetes Society of the Chinese Medical Association. The series provides a detailed exposition on risk factors and preventive knowledge for diabetes, helping the public prevent disease before it occurs. The “Experts Talk Diabetes” course is divided into foundational and advanced modules. The foundational module covers essential knowledge such as the “Five Carriages” of diabetes management, while the advanced module focuses on the management of major diabetic complications and comorbidities. Participants may select courses according to their individual needs. Starting today, both course series will be simultaneously broadcast on the official WeChat platform of the Chinese Diabetes Society, the official website of the National Office for Primary Diabetes Prevention and Control Management, the official website of the China International Medical Exchange Foundation, and on tens of millions of Xiaodu smart display speakers.

The “Blue Light Initiative” has popularized science through innovative home-based outreach, with strong support from Baidu Lingyi Zhihui. As a global leader in artificial intelligence, Baidu has been advancing smart healthcare under the “Lingyi Zhihui” brand since 2018, helping the traditional medical and health industry reduce costs, improve quality, and enhance efficiency. Its solutions have been deployed in more than 1,500 medical institutions across 27 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in China, serving over 25 million patient visits. Among these, the chronic disease management solution focuses on multiple aspects, including out-of-hospital education for diabetes patients, standardized follow-up, and proactive health management, aiming to promote comprehensive target achievement among diabetes patients. It also seeks to extend the experience gained in diabetes management to other chronic diseases, gradually ushering in a new era of proactive chronic disease management.
